The invention pertains to a device for generating aqueous chlorine dioxide solutions when the device is contacted with liquid water. The device comprises an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chlorite, e.g., sodium chlorite, and a chemical reagent comprising an acid or a material capable of releasing an acid upon exposure to liquid water, e.g., sodium bisulfate. The chlorite and the reagent are either combined as a mixture or are disposed as separate components adhered to the surface of one or more substrates. Upon exposure to liquid water, the chlorite and the reagent produce boundary layers. The chlorite and the reagent are disposed upon, and adhered to, the surface(s) of the substrates in a manner such that upon exposure to liquid water, the chlorite boundary layer comes into contact with the reagent boundary layer to thereby produce an aqueous chlorine dioxide solution.

Device for generating aqueous chlorine dioxide solutions

Methods are disclosed for providing a library of composite or novel composition samples on a support. The method involves depositing one or more components as concentration gradients on the surface of the support. The concentration gradients are placed on the support in the form of superimposed triangles which allow ready formation of composite or composition samples containing three or more components. The samples can be removed from the support by drilling out portions of the coated support so as to yield individual tablets containing the support with one or more component layers thereon. By using this method, a vast number of samples can be made.

A vehicular atmosphere cleansing system utilizes a regenerative wheel having flow channels extending through the wheel coated with an adsorbant. An atmosphere stream passes through a first position dependent portion of the wheel where VOC's including HC's are adsorbed while a heated atmosphere stream passes through a second position dependent regenerative portion of the wheel whereat VOC's are desorbed. The adsorbant is activated carbon having particles of micropore size adhered to the substrate by a silicone binder producing high adsorption efficiencies while withstanding relatively high regenerative heat temperatures resulting from exhaust gas sensible heat. A hydrocarbon senses HC in the desorbed heated atmosphere stream to rotatively and sequentially index pie shaped, segmented portions of the wheel into the wheel's regenerative region while also functioning as the main component of an OBD device for the system.

Vehicular atmosphere cleansing method

Methods are disclosed for providing a library of composite compositions on a support. The method involves depositing one or more components onto the support on either discrete spaced regions of the support or as a continuous concentration gradients on the surface of the support. The composite samples can be removed from the support by drilling out portions of the coated support so as to yield individual composite tablets containing the support with one or more component layers thereon. By using this method, a vast number of composites can be made and tested simultaneously.

A selective catalytic material is used in a method for selective oxidation of carbon monoxide in the presence of hydrocarbons and contains rhodium and a bismuth component either as a supported catalytic material dispersed on a refractory inorganic oxide support or as an unsupported catalytic material prepared, for example, by co-precipitation from a solution containing dissolved bismuth and rhodium salts. The bismuth and rhodium components are present in amounts that provide an atomic ratio of bismuth to rhodium in the range of from about 0.1:1 to 10:1, e.g., from about 1:1 to 2.5:1. The selective catalytic material is contacted under oxidizing conditions with a gas stream containing carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. Massive bodies for rapidly and safely preparing highly converted solutions of chlorine dioxide are disclosed. These massive bodies when added to water produce more chlorine dioxide than when the equivalent weights of the ingredients in powder form are added to water. The solutions produced by the addition of massive bodies to water are also disclosed. The concentration of chlorine dioxide in the solution is such that the ratio of the concentration of chlorine dioxide to the sum of the concentrations of chlorine dioxide and chlorite anion is greater than 0.25:1 by weight.

Disclosed are novel crystalline molecular sieves having the framework of ETS-10 titanium silicate which contain both octahedral and tetrahedral titanium atoms and are in acid form. The sieves are prepared by adding a complexing agent such as hydrogen peroxide during synthesis or by treating a synthesized titanium silicate molecular sieve with a reagent that replaces tetrahedral silicon with tetrahedral titanium atoms.

A catalytic structure may be in the form of a ceramic support member having disposed on it a catalytic material which is a fired coating (124a-1, 124a-2) of a catalytic ink. The catalytic ink contains a liquid vehicle, at least one metal resinate compound and fine particles of a refractory metal oxide having dispersed thereon a catalytically effective amount of a catalytic metal component such as platinum or palladium or combinations of two or more catalytic metal components. The resulting catalytic structure may be employed as a catalytic gas sensor (24, 124) and further may include at least one conductor member (130, 132) which provides both temperature sensing of the fired catalytic coating (124a-1, 124a-2) to ascertain the degree of reaction taking place at the surface thereof, and heating of the support member to heat the fired catalytic coating to a temperature high enough to promote the catalytic reaction. The catalytic structure may be prepared by applying to a substrate a coating of a catalytic ink or paste and firing the applied coating.

Catalytic structure

A selective catalytic material is used to catalyze selective oxidation of unsaturated hydrocarbons, e.g., olefins, in the presence of carbon monoxide. The catalytic material comprises phosphated ceria containing from 0.1 to 20, preferably from 1 to 5, percent by weight phosphate component (calculated as elemental phosphorus). The phosphated ceria may be made by mixing particles of ceria and a solution containing phosphates to disperse the desired amount of phosphate component on the ceria and calcining the particles after separation of them from the solution. The resulting selective catalytic material is contacted under oxidizing conditions with a gas stream containing an oxidant, e.g., air, carbon monoxide and one or more unsaturated hydrocarbons. The selective catalytic material (24a) may be disposed on a sensor (24) disposed within a conduit (18) downstream of a conventional treatment catalyst (16) to evaluate the performance of the latter by measuring the extent of unsaturated hydrocarbon oxidation catalyzed by the selective catalytic material (24a) in the treated gas.
