The present invention is concerned with providing security substrates, and documents made therefrom, such as banknotes, with features for visual inspection by members of the public. More specifically the invention relates to a novel security substrate containing at least two elongate security elements for the purposes of public and non-public verification. The security substrate comprises a substrate and at least two elongate security elements each having a width of less than or equal to 6 mm. The security elements are at least partially embedded within the substrate and running substantially parallel to each other with a gap therebetween of no greater than 10 mm. The total cross-directional width of a zone occupied by the two security elements and the gap is less than or equal to 18 mm.

Security substrate incorporating elongate security elements

The invention relates to improvements in security features in paper and other substrates and in particular to an activatable feature to warn of tampering. The invention further relates to a security feature for a security document comprising at least one activatable layer and at least one visually apparent masking layer, said at least one activatable layer comprising a composition which is generally non-mobile but which becomes mobile when wetted with a liquid, said composition further including at least one detectable component, in which under dry conditions said at least one masking layer wholly covers the activatable layer and renders it non-detectable.

Security features

A security thread (11) for use in security articles (10), includes a substrate having a coating on one or both sides thereof, the coating containing a thermochromic material selected from pigments and dyestuffs which changes from coloured to colourless when the temperature of the pigment or dyestuff is changed to the activation temperature. The thermochromic material may be coloured when the temperature is below the activation temperature and become colourless when the material is at the activation temperature or above. The thread (11) is for security paper (10) for use in producing banknotes and the like.
