A magnetic article surveillance system marker is adapted, when armed, to resonate at preselected frequencies provided by an incident magnetic field applied within an interrogation zone. The marker is a plurality of elongated ductile strips of magnetostrictive ferromagnetic material each of the strips being disposed adjacent to a ferromagnetic element which, upon being magnetized, magnetically biases the strips and arms them to resonate at the preselected frequencies. A substantial change in effective magnetic permeability of the marker at the preselected frequencies provides the marker with signal identity.

Coded surveillance system having magnetomechanical marker

A magnetic article surveillance system marker is adapted, when armed, to resonate at a frequency provided by an incident magnetic field applied within an interrogation zone. Surveillance system having magnetomechanical marker

A magnetic tape cassette is provided with a combined biasing and shielding member composed of flexible ferromagnetic material having at least 50 percent glassy structure. The member decreases construction costs and increases shielding of the magnetic tape recorder head during operation.

Amorphous spring-shield for tape cassette

The effectiveness of thermal insulation of barriers, such as walls, floors, or ceilings of a residence, is assessed by measuring the effective values of insulation or R values, of thermal barriers. Suitable devices and procedures for utilizing such devices are provided. The R values so measured can be compared with those suggested for economic insulation in such sources as government publications to determine the desirability of augmenting existing insulation. The device comprises a holder and a temperature sensor and indicator means supported on a support slidably mounted in the holder. In one embodiment, a single device combines measurement of thermal insulation and comparison with suggested values for economic insulation. A direct measurement of whether installed insulation is adequate is thus provided.

Testing effectiveness of thermal insulation

Efficient electromagnetic shielding envelopes made of wound metallic glass filaments are disclosed. They are made by winding the filaments around a suitably shaped mandrel and embedding the filaments in a matrix. These shielding envelopes have high shielding ratios at low magnetic fields and are easily manufactured.

An adhesive bonding procedure for providing mechanical stabilization for metallic glass ribbons in fabric form. A curable liquid adhesive is applied to the metallic glass fabric and is cured to adhesively bond overlapping ribbons. The resulting composite shows a high quality appearance and texture of the surface, a high flexibility of the coating on the metallic glass fabric and an ability of the adhesive bond to prevent the fabric from fraying when subjected to flexing and torsioning.

A method of continuously electroplating alloys onto strip and wire. The strip is moved in an essentially mirror symmetrical path through the plating bath with the anode generally bisected by the mirror plane. The distance between anode and strip is smaller within the mirror plane, and larger at strip positions removed from the mirror plane, resulting in essentially uniform current density over the length of the strip immersed in the plating bath and in a homogeneous composition of the plated surface layer.

Continuous electroplating of alloy onto metallic strip

A process is provided for welding metal bodies together, at least one of the metal bodies comprising a metallic material that is at least 50% glassy. The process comprises (a) clamping overlapped portions of the bodies between electrodes and applying a clamping force to the overlapped portions; (b) passing an electrical current having a rapid decay such that at least about 90% of the energy is delivered in less than about 4 .times. 10.sup.-3 sec through the bodies to melt at least a portion of one of the bodies, and (c) extracting heat from the bodies through the electrodes at a rate of at least about 10.sup.5 .degree. C/sec by employing high conductivity electrodes having a thermal conductivity of at least about 0.30 cal/sec/cm.sup.2 /.degree. C to form a weld nugget joining the bodies. The weld nugget so formed has a shear strength which is at least 25% of the tensile strength of the body having the lowest tensile strength.
