Disclosed are a method and system for transmitting and receiving traffic, by a plurality of backhaul collector sites, to and from transceivers associated with sectors of a backhaul frequency reuse plan using a backhaul portion thereof. The method and system further transmit and receive traffic, at a backstretch super collector site of a backstretch cell, to and from alternate or a subset of backhaul collector sites of the plurality of backhaul collector sites surrounding the backstretch collector site.

Various embodiments are described to address the need for providing wireless backhaul that may reduce operator startup costs while avoiding some of the drawbacks present in the prior art approaches. Generally expressed, the wireless network equipment (WNE) () of a collector cell provides access to a backhaul network () to one or more neighboring cells () via in-band wireless signaling. Given the frequency bands used by the collector cell WNE for communication with remote units, one portion of each band used for user traffic while another portion of each band is used for backhaul traffic. Having backhaul and user traffic share the assigned frequency bands can eliminate the need to license additional bands for wireless backhaul. Moreover, utilizing a portion of the existing, in-band orthogonal channels may be more spectrally efficient than using a separate radio in the same band.

The present invention provides a method of adjusting channel powers during operation of a wireless communication system. A relatively few pieces of operating data are obtained from the wireless communication system and simulation techniques are used to identify potential system performance problems. A revised set of channel powers are formulated to correct the potential system performance problems. The performance improvement of the revised set of channel powers is verified using simulation techniques, and then the revised set of channel powers is implemented in the wireless communication system.

A code division multiple access (CDMA) communication system (100) has improved control by accurately characterizing coverage and loading parameters related to the CDMA communication system (100). The parameter meshes are evaluated, either individually or in combination, to provide comprehensive information regarding the performance of the CDMA communication system. Base stations (101, 102) utilize a spreading code that is dependent upon whether the particular base station (101) is operating in a synchronized, or an unsynchronized mode. To reduce the search time for remote units (113) within the communication system (100), a group identification code (GIC) (305) is broadcast during a time period that the long code is masked. Additionally, each base station (101, 102) within the communication system (100) determines its synchronization status and utilizes a particular GIC (305) and long code based on the base station's synchronization status.

There is provided a method of rapid Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) of a time-dispersed signal having echoes (where the time dispersal represents a significant fraction or more of the transmitted symbol interval). It comprises a sliding correlation of a received signal against a known sequence or via channel sounding to obtain the time-dispersal function of the communications channel upon which the signal is transmitted and a summation of the squares of the quadrature components of the energies at relative maxima of the correlations (correlation peaks determined with reference to a threshold level) to integrate the energy defined by the correlation function to determine the energy present among the time-dispersed echoes utilizing the time-dispersal function. Thus, the energy present in the time-dispersed echoes is related to the received signal strength, the RSSI comprises a scalar of the energy present and the scalar comprises a function of the receiver's gain, RSSI determinations during any given interval are less dependent upon the ambulatory velocity of the receiver, and RSSI determinations of equivalent accuracy are obtained more rapidly or more accurate RSSI determinations are obtained per unit time.

In a communications system having transmissions containing certain information-of-interest at predetermined intervals in the transmission, there is provided a method for isolating and processing that information-of-interest. The method comprises sensing the start of a transmission and isolating for processing as the information-of-interest, the information received about instant(s) predeterminally removed in time from the sensed start of transmission. Thus, the information-of-interest is isolated principally on the basis of elapsed time. The method for isolating and processing that information-of-interest is further characterized by sensing the start of a transmission from the received signal power of the transmission exceeding a predetermined threshold; AGCing the transmission and attenuating the AGC'd transmission from a maximum level to a desired level before the information-of-interest is expected to arrive; isolating for processing as the information-of-interest, the information received about instant(s) predeterminally removed in time from the sensed start of transmission, by timing the expected interval between the instant that the start of the transmission is sensed and the predetermined instant that the information-in-interest should arrive (whereby the information-of-interest is isolated principally on the basis of elapsed time); tagging the information isolated about that instant for processing; and beginning processing with information just preceeding the isolated information (whereby the reliability of the information detection is enhanced by one-to-several bits).

Elements of the system are represented (102, 110) as various shapes (30, 32, 40) defined by an number of different parameters on a display device (24). As performance parameter data changes with time, e.g., during system operation, the defining parameters are altered such that the shape representing the system element is modified (106, 114). Method and apparatus of adaptive maximum likelihood sequence estimation

A communication system dynamically assigns channels to a subscriber unit so as to, inter alia, mitigate the effects of co-channel interference in the system. The communication system has a plurality of base-stations receiving the transmission of a subscriber unit desiring service. Upon receipt of the subscriber unit's transmission, each base-station determines a signal quality value, which it then reports to a system controller. The system controller determines the best signal quality value reported and assigns a channel to the base-station which reported the best signal quality value. The chosen base-station transmits to the subscriber unit on an assigned channel to establish communication. The assigned channel transmitted by the chosen base-station need not be associated with the channel the subscriber transmits on. In fact, either channel may be any one of the channels allocated for use by the communication system.

Dynamic channel assignment in a communication system

In a communications network having time-dispersed signals, there is provided a mechanism for soft decision decoding. It comprises: radio reception of a time-dispersed signal, at least partly equalizing those time-dispersal effects, recovering information contained in the signal, multiplying with that recovered information the absolute value of that at-least-partly-equalized signal (scaled by a number derived from channel conditions over a time during which at least part of the information to be recovered is distributed), and error-correcting the multiplied information by a Viterbi algorithm channel decoding scheme of error correction. Accordingly, soft decision information is generated from within the equalization process itself.

Soft decision decoding with channel equalization

An equalization system for equalizing a corrupted signal is disclosed. The equalization system includes a complex matched filter (400) and a maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE) (405) for removing the effects of phase shift, amplitude variations, intersymbol interference, etc. resulting from multi-pathing and noise contributed by the receiver front end. The system estimates a correlation signal C(t) (505) and synchronizes C(t) 505 to maximize its energy as seen on the taps of the complex matched filter (400). Taps having amplitude coefficients below a predetermined threshold are set to zero to produce a modified CIR estimate. The modified CIR estimate which has had the effects of noise virtually eliminated, is then used to construct the complex matched filter (400) and is also used as input to the MLSE (405) to produce a better equalized data signal.
