The subject invention relates to a process for coating aggregate which is particularly useful in making asphalt concrete to provide the aggregate with a high level of resistance to stripping by water, which comprises: (1) mixing the aggregate with latex to form a latex/aggregate mixture, wherein said latex is comprised of water, an emulsifier, a polymer and a water-soluble divalent metal salt; (2) heating the latex/aggregate mixture to a temperature which is within the range of about 66&deg; C. to about 232&deg; C.; (3) maintaining the latex/aggregate mixture at said elevated temperature for a time which is sufficient to reduce the moisture content of the latex/aggregate mixture below about 0.7 weight percent and to allow the polymer in the latex to crosslink on the surface of the aggregate to produce the coated aggregate.

This invention relates to fire retardant latex binders for non-woven fabrics. Non-woven fabrics can be manufactured using the fire retardant latex binder formulations of this invention using cotton fibers, polyester fibers, rayon fibers, nylon fibers, cellulosic fibers, fiber glass or various mixtures of such fibers. The fire retardant latex binders of this invention are particularly useful in manufacturing fiber glass furnace filters. The fire retardant latex binders of this invention are comprised of (1) water, (2) a styrene-butadiene rubber, (3) a fatty acid soap, (4) a sulfonate surfactant, (5) an ethylene oxide/propylene oxide/ethylene oxide triblock polymer, wherein the ethylene oxide/propylene oxide/ethylene oxide triblock polymer has a number average molecular weight of at least 8000, and (6) about 10 phr to about 50 phr of diammonium phosphate.

Binder for non-woven fabric

This invention relates to fire retardant latex binders for non-woven fabrics. Non-woven fabrics can be manufactured using the fire retardant latex binder formulations of this invention using cotton fibers, polyester fibers, rayon fibers, nylon fibbers, cellulosic fibers. The fire retardant latex binders of this invention are particularly useful in manufacturing fiber glass furnace filters. The fire retardant latex binders of this invention are comprised of (1) water, (2) a styrene-butadiene rubber, (3) a fatty acid soap, (4) a sulfonate surfactant, (5) an ethylene oxide/propylene oxide/ethylene oxide triblock polymer, wherein the ethylene oxide/propylene oxide/ethylene oxide triblock polymer has a number average molecular weight of at least 8000, and (6) about 10 phr to about 50 phr of diammonium phosphate.

Conventional SBR does not have the soft and smooth chew characteristics needed in chewing gum base for soft chew applications. Conventional SBR typically also has undesirable odor and taste characteristics that have generally limited its use in chewing gum base formulations. However, there is a desire to use SBR in such applications because it is relatively inexpensive. The present invention also specifically discloses a process for synthesizing styrene-butadiene rubber that is particularly useful in manufacturing chewing gum base for soft chew applications which comprises copolymerizing about 1 phm to about 12 phm styrene and about 88 phm to about 99 phm of 1,3-butadiene in an aqueous emulsion, wherein said copolymerization is conducted at a temperature which is within the range of about 1&deg; C. to about 20&deg; C., and wherein said copolymerization is initiated with an initiator system which is comprised of (a) a free radical generator, (b) a reducing agent selected from the group consisting of ascorbic acid, isoascorbic acid, and ascorbic acid derivatives having the structural formula:

The subject invention relates to a latex blend which is particularly beneficial when utilized in manufacturing coatings for concrete structures, said latex being comprised of a blend of (1) from about 60 weight percent to about 95 weight percent of a first latex which is comprised of (a) water, (b) a polymer that is comprised of repeat units which are derived from about 30 to about 70 weight percent vinyl aromatic monomers, from about 25 to about 65 weight percent of at least one alkyl acrylate monomer, from about 1 to about 5 weight percent of acrylic acid and from about 0.4 to about 3 weight percent methacrylic acid, (c) about 0.2 phr to 0.4 phr of at least one sulfonate surfactant and (d) about 4 phr to 8 phr of at least one water-insoluble nonionic surface active agent having a hydrophilic-lipophile balance number which is within the range of about 12 to about 20 and (2) from about 5 weight percent to about 40 weight percent of a second latex which is comprised of (a) water, (b) a polymer that is comprised of repeat units which are derived from about 70 weight percent to about 100 weight percent diene monomers and from 0 weight percent to about 30 weight percent vinyl aromatic monomers and (c) an emulsifier.

Coating for concrete structures

It has been determined that rubbery terpolymers of a conjugated diolefin monomer, a vinyl aromatic monomer, and N-(isobutoxymethyl) acrylamide (IBMA) can be used to modify asphalt cement to greatly enhance the resistance to shoving, rutting, and low temperature cracking of asphalt concretes made therewith. These rubbery polymers have a Mooney viscosity which is within the range of about 35 to about 80. It has further been determined that these rubbery terpolymers are compatible with virtually all types of asphalt. It is particularly preferred for the rubbery polymers of this invention to also contain repeat units which are derived from hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA). The subject invention more specifically relates to a modified asphalt cement which is comprised of (1) from about 90 weight percent to about 99 weight percent of asphalt; and (2) from about 1 weight percent to about 10 weight percent of a rubbery polymer which is comprised of repeat units which are derived from (a) about 64 weight percent to about 84.9 weight percent of a conjugated diolefin monomer, (b) about 15 weight percent to about 33 weight percent of a vinyl aromatic monomer, and (c) about 0.1 weight percent to about 3 weight percent of isobutoxymethyl acrylamide, wherein the repeat units in the rubbery polymer which are derived from the conjugated diolefin monomer, the vinyl aromatic monomer, and the isobutoxymethyl acrylamide are in the backbone of the rubbery polymer.

Asphalt cement modification

The present invention relates to a process for preparing a masterbatch rubber containing polymer bound functionalized moieties. The process comprises the emulsion polymerization at a temperature from 40.degree. C. to 100.degree. C. of (a) at least one functionalized monomer that contains a polymerizable vinyl group; with (b) at least one copolymerizable conjugated diene monomer selected from the group consisting of butadiene-1,3,2 chlorobutadiene-1,3, isoprene, piperylene and conjugated hexadienes, wherein the polymerization is conducted in the presence of from (1) from 2 to 30 parts by weight of an ionic surfactant per 100 parts by weight of organic components and (2) about 10 to about 70 parts by weight of a plasticizer based on 100 parts by weight of total monomers. Other than the water, ionic surfactant, and the copolymerizable conjugated diene, the plasticizer functions as the sole solvent for the functionalized monomer during the emulsion polymerization and additionally functions as a plasticizer for the final polymer product.

Process for the preparation of a masterbatch rubber having polymer bound

The present invention relates to a process for preparing a rubber containing polymer bound functionalities. The process comprises the emulsion polymerization at a temperature ranging from about 0.degree. C. to about 25.degree. C. of (a) at least one functionalized monomer that contains a polymerizable vinyl group; with (b) at least one copolymerizable conjugated diene monomer selected from the group consisting of butadiene 1,3, 2-chlorobutadiene-1,3, isoprene, piperylene and conjugated hexadienes; wherein the polymerization is conducted in the presence of from (1) from 2 to 30 parts by weight of an ionic surfactant per 100 parts by weight of organic components and (2) about 1 to about 70 parts by weight of a plasticizer based on 100 parts by weight of total monomers. Other than the water, ionic surfactant, and the copolymerizable conjugated diene, the plasticizer functions as the sole solvent agent for the functionalized monomer during the emulsion polymerization and additionally functions as a plasticizer for the final polymer product.

Process for the preparation of a rubber having polymer bound

The subject invention relates to a process for coating aggregate which is particularly useful in making asphalt concrete to provide the aggregate with a high level of resistance to stripping by water, which comprises: (1) mixing the aggregate with latex to form a latex/aggregate mixture which is comprised of from about 0.005 weight percent to about 0.5 weight percent dry polymer; (2) heating the latex/aggregate mixture to a temperature which is within the range of about 66.degree. C. to about 232.degree. C.; (3) maintaining the latex/aggregate mixture at said elevated temperature for a time which is sufficient to reduce the moisture content of the latex/aggregate mixture below about 0.7 weight percent and to allow the polymer in the latex to crosslink on the surface of the aggregate to produce the coated aggregate.
