Self-healing compositions, method of preparation and uses thereof are disclosed. In an example, a self-healing composition includes a first microcapsule and a second microcapsule. The first microcapsule includes a first polydimethylsiloxane resin, a first silicone fluid, a first functionalized alkoxysilane, and a catalyst capable of catalyzing hydrosilylation reactions, and the second microcapsule includes a second polydimethylsiloxane resin, a second silicone fluid, a second functionalized alkoxysilane, and a hydrogen-terminated dimethyl siloxane resin. In this way, the self-healing composition releases and mixes contents of the first microcapsule and the second microcapsule upon the rupture thereof, imparting a passively initiated repair process to the self-healing composition.

Silicone-based protective formulations

Embodiments provide a self-healing coating formulation comprised of a one component waterborne epoxy-amine adduct resin system and a microencapsulated healing agent. The self-healing coating formulation hardens to a protective material upon application to a substrate. Components in the protective material and microencapsulated healing agent are uniquely synergistic with each other such that, upon degradation of the protective material, microcapsule rupture causes release of the healing agent, whereby components of the healing agent react with components of the protective material to increase adhesion maintenance and corrosion resistance of the protective coating.

One-component waterborne self-healing epoxy formulation

Microencapsulated healing agents that, upon incorporation into a zinc-rich coating or coating system, improve the coating or coating system's ability to maintain its adhesion and corrosion resistance after damage that exposes the underlying substrate. These microencapsulated healing agent formulations are uniquely synergistic with zinc-rich coatings, and/or with zinc particles in a zinc rich coating, improving both adhesion maintenance and corrosion resistance following damage that exposes the substrate.

Zinc-rich coatings and systems with microencapsulated healing agents

Disclosed are methods of protecting porous substrates and/or increasing the peel-resistance of coatings and stains for porous substrates. The methods may include providing a stain or coating comprising a microencapsulated self-healing material; and applying the stain or coating to a porous substrate. Damage to the stain or coating may release the self-healing material at a site of damage, such as a crack or scratch in the stain or coating. The self-healing material may be a polymeric precursor, an unsaturated polyester resin or alkyd, a fatty acid-based natural oil or derivative thereof, or a cross-linkable silane or siloxane monomer or resin. The microencapsulated self-healing material may include a microcapsule having a shell wall that includes a thermosetting polymer or a thermoplastic polymer; the thermosetting polymer may include urea-formaldehyde, melamine formaldehyde, polyurethane, polyurea, or polyacrylate; and the thermoplastic polymer comprises poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(lactic acid), or poly(glycolic acid).

Peel-resistant self-healing coatings and stains for porous substrates

Disclosed are biocidal self-healing protective materials, including coatings, stains, sealants, and adhesives. The biocidal protective materials may include a first microcapsule that includes a hydrophobic film-forming agent and a hydrophobic biocidal agent. Upon rupture of the first microcapsule, the hydrophobic film-forming agent may form a polymerized film that includes the hydrophobic biocidal agent. The biocidal protective materials may include a second microcapsule that may include a curing agent. Upon rupture of the first and second microcapsules, the curing agent may cause the hydrophobic film-forming agent to form a polymerized film that includes the hydrophobic biocidal agent. Also disclosed are protective materials that include a polymeric material matrix and the first and/or second microcapsules, as well as methods of increasing the biocidal activity of a protective material and methods of increasing a biocidal activity of a porous substrate.

Biocidal protective formulations

Disclosed herein are methods and formulations for the microencapsulation of aminosiloxanes, for example for use as an additive in protective material formulations such as those used in the protection and/or joining of metal substrates. The additives may be used in conjunction with a second reactant that may or may not be similarly microencapsulated for self-healing (and associated corrosion resistance) or delayed cure applications, or they may be used alone or in conjunction with other corrosion inhibitors for protective formulations with improved corrosion resistance on appropriate substrates.

Microencapsulated aminosiloxanes for protective material formulations

Disclosed herein are compositions and methods for increasing microcapsule dispersion in self-healing paint and coating applications, and more particularly for non-covalent functionalization of polymeric microcapsule shell walls for improved dispersion in polymeric material formulations. Some embodiments are methods of forming a microcapsule dispersion, the methods including providing a polymeric material capable of forming a plurality of microcapsules; initiating polymerization of the polymeric material under reaction conditions sufficient to permit formation of the plurality of microcapsules; and adding an ethoxy-functionalized dispersant to the polymeric material before formation of the plurality of microcapsules is complete, thereby forming the microcapsule dispersion.

Dispersion of microcapsules for self-healing applications

Disclosed herein are self-healing materials, which are smart materials that are capable of repairing themselves without any external intervention when they are damaged. The self-healing materials may be microencapsulated, for example in a one-capsule system or a two-capsule system, and damage to a matrix containing the microcapsules may rupture the microcapsules and cause the healing materials to be released into the site of damage, where it may polymerize and restore the functional capabilities of the matrix. The self-healing materials may be based on unsaturated multi-functional resins capable of oxygen-initiated cross-linking, and may include alkyd resins, such as alkyd resins that include one or more telechelic end groups.

Self-healing polymeric materials via unsaturated polyester resin chemistry

Disclosed herein are self-healing systems that include corrosion inhibitors and self-healing materials that are capable of repairing themselves without any external intervention when they are damaged. The self-healing materials and corrosion inhibitors may be microencapsulated, and damage to a matrix containing the microcapsules may rupture the microcapsules and cause the self-healing materials and corrosion inhibitors to be released into the site of damage. The self-healing materials then may polymerize and restore the functional capabilities of the matrix, and the corrosion inhibitors may work in concert with the self healing materials to prevent corrosion at the site of damage.

Self-healing agent formulations containing liquid corrosion inhibitors

A composite material precursor composition includes a matrix precursor, a first plurality of capsules including a liquid polymerizer, an activator, and an accelerant. The liquid polymerizer polymerizes when in contact with the activator, and the accelerant is an accelerant for the polymerization of the liquid polymerizer. The composite material precursor may be used to form a composite material that includes a solid polymer matrix, the first plurality of capsules in the solid polymer matrix, the activator in the solid polymer matrix, and the accelerant in the solid polymer matrix.
