An explosive-grade ammonium nitrate product dimensionally stabilized with a hydratable internal additive in an amount from 0.05 to 2.0% (wt/wt), having a bulk density in the range from 0.80 to 0.96 gm/cm.sup.3, exhibiting a porosity such that the product will absorb and retain at least 5% (wt/wt) of a fuel oil, retaining a particulate (prill) hardness of at least 15 kg/cm.sup.2 and having a Caking Index of less than 1.4 kg/cm.sup.2.

Exposive grade ammonium nitrate

A process for granulating ammonium phosphate containing composition for use as a fertilizer which comprises feeding a slurry or melt of ammonium phosphate, wherein said slurry or melt is capable of further reaction with ammonia, into a kneading mill, feeding recycled particles from the subsequent classification and crushing procedure into said kneading mill, wherein the said slurry or melt added to the mill is from 5 to 95% wt. of the total slurry or melt, feeding ammonia into said mill to react with at least a portion of the reactable components of said slurry or melt, generating a heat of reaction, subjecting said mixture to a kneading action within said mill until the heat of reaction and the kneading action cause a repeated disposition of fertilizer material onto the solids and cause a repeated drying of said deposit, passing the product from said kneading mill into a rotary drum granulator, feeding additional ammonium phosphate containing slurry or melt to a said granulator in an amount of from 95% to 5% wt. based on the total slurry or melt, feeding additional amounts of ammonia to said granulator wherein at least a portion of the reactable components of said slurry or melt is reacted, giving off a heat of reaction, subjecting said mixture to a rotary action until said heat of reaction and tumbling action of the rotary granulator effects a further deposition of fertilizer material onto the solids, passing the product from said granulator into a dryer so as to remove excess water, subjecting said dried product to a classification apparatus so as to separate out particles which are outside the product size range, recycling at least a portion of said particle mixture to said kneading mill, and recovering said dried particles of product size. Commensurate apparatus is provided to perform said process.

Process for granulating ammonium phosphate containing fertilizers

A method for neutralizing nitric acid with ammonia comprising feeding nitric acid into a first aqueous reaction zone, feeding ammonia into a second aqueous reaction zone which has an inlet at the lower portion of the first reaction zone and is in circulating communication therewith, circulating the nitric acid downward within the first reaction zone into the inlet of the second reaction zone so that it is substantially diluted before entering the second reaction zone, whereby a predominent proportion of the nitric acid is reacted with the ammonia in the second reaction zone so as to form an ammonium nitrate solution, and removing the ammonium nitrate containing solution from the second reaction zone and recirculating the ammonium nitrate containing solution from the second reaction zone to the first reaction zone so that the solution and gases therefrom are substantially completely introduced into the first reaction zone with sufficient force so as to create a scrubbing turbulence of the gas as gas bubbles in the first reaction zone whereby soluble components of the gas are dissolved into the solution of the first reaction zone, maintaining the velocity of liquid within the first reaction zone flowing downward toward the inlet of the second reaction zone less than the terminal velocity of rising gas bubbles so that substantially all of the gas bubbles are permitted to rise and disengage from the first reaction zone and thereafter be recovered, and recovering the ammonium nitrate product from the recirculated solution before additional nitrate acid flows into the recirculated solution.

Ammonium nitrate neutralization

A thermal syphon-pressure pump neutralizer for neutralizing nitric acid with ammonia, comprising a reaction vessel for containing an aqueous reaction medium and having a gas outlet in its upper end and a product outlet spaced therebelow, a fluid impervious vertically disposed cylindrical member in the vessel defining a second reaction zone therewithin and a first reaction zone between the member and the vessel, the lower inlet end of the cylindrical member being spaced above the bottom of the vessel, ammonia inlet means leading into the bottom of the vessel in close proximity to but spaced below the cylindrical member inlet, nitric acid inlet means leading into the first reaction zone being spaced a predetermined distance above the cylindrical member inlet and below the product outlet, a free gas zone being provided between the reaction zones and the gas outlet and deflector means above the second reaction zone and in communication with the first reaction zone so that solution and gases evolved from the outlet of the second reaction zone are substantially reintroduced into the first reaction zone before entering the free gas zone with sufficient force to create a scrubbing turbulence within the first reaction zone.

Ammonium nitrate neutralizer

A particulate fertilizer comprising urea particles having a fertilizing quantity of available zinc in the form of zinc oxide which is homogeneously dispersed throughout the urea particles. The urea-zinc oxide particles may be prepared by dissolving zinc oxide into molten urea containing less than 12% by weight water, based on water/urea + water, and solidifying the molten urea-zinc oxide blend into particles of any desired form.

Urea-zinc oxide composition and process

Urea particles uniformly coated with zinc oxide having excellent adherence and uniformity of the zinc oxide coating are obtained by using a zinc oxide composition characterized by having a purity of 90 to 99% zinc oxide and a uniform particle size of at least 90% smaller than 12 microns and at least 95% smaller than 37 microns. Outstanding coatings are obtained if the zinc oxide composition additionally contains traces of carbon, iron oxide, magnesium oxide, or calcium oxide. High zinc-content coatings of excellent uniformity and adherence may be obtained with these coating compositions.

Zinc oxide coated urea

Potassium cyanate is prepared by reacting from 1.75 to 2.15 moles of urea per mole of potassium hydroxide.
