The invention relates to a sheet guide element for use in an apparatus for transporting sheets by means of a gripper system having at least two grippers spaced apart from each other and a sheet guide surface defined by the sheet guide element. Here, the sheet guide element is provided with depressions in the sheet guide surface, running parallel to the transport direction, at least in some sections, in order at least partially to accommodate the grippers, so that the sheet guide surface described by the sheet guide element in the transport direction runs, at least in some sections, at the same height as the movement path of the sheet leading edge fixed in the gripper system.

A quality control device includes a suction box, at least one gripper which can be displaced along a suction surface of the suction box, and a CCD camera. A belt, which can be displaced in a sheet transport direction, is disposed on the suction surface of the suction box.

Image areas that have been printed by specific printing plates or areas are coordinated with those specific plates or areas. A counter is coordinated with each specific image area and specific plate or area which prints it. If a predetermined number of faults are counted, a signal is generated and can be used to shut down the press or to advise the press operator of the existence of the recurring fault.

Process for assessing the quality of processed material

The quality of processed or printed sheets is assessed while the sheets are supported on the periphery of a drum. The surface of each drum is provided with sheet leading and trailing end gripper systems which are circumferentially, and axially shiftable with respect to each other. Each sheet to be inspected is stretched tightly on the periphery of its supporting drum before the quality of the printing or other processing done to the sheet is assessed.

A sheet-guiding suction box can be adapted to the size or format of a plurality of sizes of sheets to be guided. This is accomplished by structuring the guide box with a plurality of independently acting suction chambers. A central suction area of the guide surface of the suction box is smaller in size than the smallest format of a sheet to be guided.
