An operative arrangement of two halves of a plastic stay fused in a U-shape in encircling relation about a brassiere cup which have facing inboard semi-circular edges where the U-shape is interrupted, thus increasing the extent of the edges that are held against movement by the fusing to contribute to obviating corresponding movement from their position of support during wearing of the brassiere.

A brassiere cup molding method using moldable and non-moldable fabric blanks in which a mold with a cup shape is used to project into a cup shape a fabric blank that is stretchable but absent of plastic moldable content, i.e. non-moldable, while it is in spanning relation across an opening of a fabric blank having a plastic content, i.e. moldable, wherein the moldable blank assumes a molded frusto conical shape about the opening therein which holds the stretch fabric, although not molded, in the cup shape that was imparted to it by the mold by not allowing the stretch fabric to return to its pre-stretched flat condition.

In the method of U.S. Pat. No. 4,172,002, a support patch and brassiere fabric both must have the requisite stretch to stay in conforming changing shapes during the molding thereof into a three-dimensional cup shape, such that said same or conforming shapes of each in the molded product are devoid of wrinkles or the like. As an improvement to the patented method, the within support patch is prepared to assume an increase in size without stretching, thereby enabling even non-stretch fabrics to be used as a support attachment for a molded brassiere cup.

Method of making a molded brassiere cup

This invention concerns a knitted elastic fold-over edge band for use as edging for example on women's undergarments wherein the edge band would be folded lengthwise and sewn to the edge of the item of apparel, such as a brassiere, panty, etc. Half of the width of the edge band would have a soft surface created by knitting half the band width with a jersey stitch using textured yarn while the other half of the band width would be made with conventional lace construction. The soft half of the band would be adjacent the wearer's skin, thereby providing comfort, while the lace portion would be exposed on the outer surface of the item of apparel, thereby providing a decorative element. The edge band would be sewn to the garment in this manner and beauty would be enhanced since the stitches used for sewing the edge band would be less visible since they would be disguised by the lace design.

A shape-supported molded brassiere cup in which a support patch manifesting a smooth surface bounding the volume of the three-dimensional cup shape is advantageously embodied in the brassiere cup construction during the molding thereof. Thus, the resulting cup obviates any need for shaping and stiffening stays or the like, and the surface of the support patch, being smooth because it expands in strict conformance with that of the moldable fabric ply, contributes to the comfort in the wearing and use of the brassiere.

An attachment for a sewing machine for inserting a selected length of elastic in a hem formed along a fabric edge, such as for example along the corners of a bed sheet, to thereby contribute to the form-fitting performance of the product. During sewing attachment of the elastic, it is contacted by a member disposed across its feed path, with the desired result that the elastic expands and is thus sewn in place with a controlled degree of tension. The aforesaid elastic-tensioning member, however, is effectively cleared from the elastic feed path during initial positioning or feed of the elastic to the sewing station by a track member which initially moves with the elastic and makes path-clearing contact with the elastic-tensioning member.
