A lubricant composition especially useful for saw guide use comprises a base oil composed of at least one synthetic ester and a thickener composed of a styrene-olefin copolymer dissolved in a vegetable oil. The thickener is present in an amount sufficient to provide the lubricant with a viscosity at 40.degree. C. of greater than about 100 cSt.

High viscosity, biodegradable lubricating oil

A method for predicting the properties of crude oils or their boiling fractions which comprises selecting a chemical or perceptual or physical or performance property or groups of properties of the crude oil or its boiling fractions and creating a training set from reference samples which contain characteristic molecular species present in the crude oil or its boiling fractions. The reference samples are subjected to GC/MS analysis wherein the often collinear data generated is treated by multivariate correlation methods. The training set produces coefficients which are multiplied by the matrix generated from a GC/MS analysis of an unknown sample to produce a predicted value of the chemical, performance, perceptual or physical property or groups of properties selected.

Method for predicting chemical or physical properties of crude oils

Liquid hydrocarbon streams, preferably petroleum streams, most preferably lube and specialty oil streams and in particular transformer oils are rendered resistant to oxidation by treatment with a silver salt impregnated adsorbent, preferably silver nitrate impregnated alumina by the process of contacting the hydrocarbon oil stream with the silver salt impregnated adsorbent and recovering a hydrocarbon stream of reduced pro-oxidant heteroatom compound (nitrogen compound and sulfur compound) content. The silver salt impregnated adsorbent is regenerated by sequential washing with portions of aromatic solvent and polar solvent. The aromatic solvent strips aromatic sulfides from the adsorbent. This fraction may be recombined with the hydrocarbon stream, especially in the case of transformer oils, so as to enhance the oxidation stability/resistance of the oil. The polar solvent, such as 3% methanol in toluene, strips the aliphatic sulfides from the absorbent. The regenerated column is then ready for reuse.
