A method and apparatus for transferring a user data profile from a user's home terminal to a visiting terminal is disclosed. User or network configuration settings are transferred from a home telephony adapter to a visiting telephony adapter. In accordance with one embodiment, a computer readable medium, such as a flash drive is inserted into the home telephony adapter and, either with or without authentication, user or network configuration settings are transferred from the home telephony adapter to the medium. In another embodiment, the medium is then inserted into the visiting telephony adapter.

Ad insertion includes providing a multimedia applications gateway that is connected to an access gateway for an end user device and receiving, at the multimedia applications gateway via the access gateway, multimedia program content. The multimedia applications gateway converts the program content from a program media source into a first communication having an open standards protocol recognized by the end user device. The ad insertion also includes receiving directly, at the multimedia applications gateway from an advertising media source, multimedia advertising content. The multimedia applications gateway converts the multimedia advertising content into a second communication having the open standards protocol. The second communication is stored in a local memory of the multimedia applications gateway. The ad insertion further includes retrieving the second communication from the local memory, inserting the second communication at a location within the first communication, and presenting the first and second communications on the end user device.

A method includes providing a multimedia applications gateway (MAG) that is connected to an access gateway for a domain or a multimedia applications gateway that includes an integrated access gateway function, the access gateway in communication with user devices. The method also includes configuring the MAG to convert multimedia program content from a program source received at the access gateway and transmitted from the access gateway to a user device into a first communication having an open standards protocol recognized by each of the user devices, the first communication representing programming content. The method further includes configuring the MAG to convert multimedia advertising content into a second communication having the open standards protocol, the second communication representing advertising content. The method also includes retrieving the second communication from local memory, inserting the second communication within the first communication, and presenting the first and second communications on the device.

A home network management application is downloaded to the multimedia applications gateway operating in a home network. An anomaly that occurs in the home network is observed. The method also includes configuring the multimedia applications gateway to convert network communications of a selected application service that is downloaded to the access gateway and transmitted from the access gateway to an end user device into communications having an open standards protocol recognized by each of the end user devices. The method further includes executing the selected application service via a virtual machine operating on an operating system of the multimedia applications gateway, and monitoring activities occurring in response to execution of the selected application service.

A terminal adapter for guaranteeing the quality of service of both voice and data packets is disclosed. Such quality is ensured by inserting gaps between successive data packets in a stream of multiplexed data and/or voice packets. A gap after a particular data packet is proportional to the size of that particular data packet. In this way, bandwidth is preserved for any voice packets that may have arrived during the transfer of the data packet as well as for any voice packets that arrive during the gap. The unconstrained upstream data bandwidth and the bandwidth used by voice calls may each be estimated by taking a plurality of instantaneous measurements of the available bandwidth and/or taking individual direct measurements. The size of data packets may be limited to a maximum size in order to ensure that time-sensitive voice packets experience only an acceptable delay in queue for transmission.
