An exhaust valve and method for use in medical ventilation and anesthesiology therapy wherein the valve combines gas delivery and controlled exhalation or exhaust functions; also certain medical gas administering systems incorporating the novel valve and method.

Medical gas flow control valve, system and method

A respiratory mask having a flexible seal that encompasses a space which is formed and adapted to receive nasal or nasal and oral portions of a user's face, the mask also having a rigid support extending continuously adjacent the perimeter of the flexible seal to support a portion thereof against radially outward deformation under the influence of internal pressure within the space encompassed thereby, while permitting a continuously extending perimeteral portion of the flexible seal to resiliently deform against the facial structure of the user to form a surface seal in engagement therewith, the degree of such deformation of the flexible seal being limited by insertion of selected spacers from a family of differently sized spacers intermediate the mask and the face of the user to thereby limit the minimum spacing that may be established between the mask and the face of the user, and to thereby accommodate adjustment of the seal profile to the user's face.

An inhalation/exhalation valve for use in conjunction with a medical respiration apparatus to maintain an adjustable positive end expiration pressure through incorporation of novel valving elements including a novel, adjustable spring for establishing and maintaining the threshhold pressure of exhalation and a novel flow control valve disk structure which utilizes the dynamic pressure of exhalation flow to assist in providing control over and fine adjustability of the valve disk motion and which further permits continuous supply flow during both the inhalation and exhalation portions of the patient's breathing cycle.

An endotracheal tube holder including an endotracheal tube platform portion having a clamp for clamping an endotracheal tube into a tube channel wherein the tube platform portion is supported with respect to the patient's head by the face plate frame secured to the face of a patient by a harness worn on the head of the patient. The endotracheal tube holder is secured with respect to the patient's face with portions thereof bearing on the upper and lower jaw portions of the patient's face.

One end of an endotracheal tube is encircled by an inflatable cuff, to which is connected a tubule that extends toward the opposite end of the tube and into a valve housing having an air inlet bore from which passages extend to the tubule and to an inflatable member. The bore contains valve means normally closing off the inlet of the bore, and means for opening the valve to admit air under pressure or to release it therefrom to inflate and deflate the cuff and inflatable member. A constant pressure means is disposed in the housing for exerting a substantially constant bias against the inflatable member throughout a predetermined range of expansion of the inflatable member to maintain preset air inflation pressures within the inflatable member and the cuff substantially constant, even though their respective inflation volumes may vary. An additional feature resides in the fact that the inflatable member is enclosed in the housing and the housing is sealed for expansion and contraction of the inflatable member within the sealed housing, and another tubule communicates the interior of this sealed housing with the interior of the endotracheal tube thereby preventing collapse of the inflated cuff when gas pressures within the endotracheal tube exceed the cuff inflation pressure.

An exhalation valve for inhalation therapy includes a base member provided with an exhalation port encircled by a valve seat for a valve closure disc, the center of which is connected to the inner end of a pin extending outwardly away from the disc and slidably mounted in a sleeve spaced from the disc. The sleeve is held rigidly by a support connected with the base member. A number of Constant-Force Compression coil springs extend between the sleeve and disc and are bowed outwardly away from the pin. The ends of the springs are connected with the sleeve and closure disc to urge the disc toward the valve seat. The springs exert a substantially constant pressure against the disc as it is moved outwardly away from the valve seat by air flowing out through the valve port.

A pair of laterally spaced foot treadles are hinged at their front ends to one end of a hollow base and normally are held in an inclined position by springs. Mounted between each treadle and the base is a normally inflated flexible air chamber that communicates with an air inlet and an air outlet in the base provided with check valves. The outlets of the outlet valves are connected by a conduit that is provided with an exhaust valve, the opening of which is resisted when either treadle is depressed, whereby it requires effort to expel air from the underlying chamber.

The proximal portion of a tracheostomy tube extends through an opening in the central body of a retaining member that is held against the front of the neck of a patient. A pair of laterally spaced struts at opposite sides of the opening are connected at one end to the central body. Means rigidly connected to the proximal portion of the tube extend laterally therefrom in opposite directions for connection to the struts extending forward beside the tube, whereby to hold the tube in place.

Tracheostomy tube and retainer

A tracheal tube having straight inner and outer end portions integrally connected by a curved central portion contains a cannula that can be removed from one end. The cannula is a normally straight one-piece flexible tube of plastic circumferentially corrugated from approximately its inner end outwardly to a point at least as far as the outer end of the curved central portion of the tracheal tube. The corrugated wall of the cannula stiffens the part of the cannula that extends through the curved central portion of the tracheal tube to prevent it from collapsing when the cannula is inserted in the tracheal tube.
