A medication management system which includes three components to assist a patient control, monitor and manage administration of prescribed medications. The system comprises a patient component having a retrievable patient database of patient medical history, prior prescribed medications and current prescribed medications, and it includes a data transfer interface, e.g., a hardwired interface, such as an RS232 interface or infrared data transfer port. The system also includes a physician component having a retrievable physician's database of medication information and an input/output device enabling a prescribing physician to enter prescription information into the physician component. The physician's database is capable of receiving and storing patient data transferred from the patient component through said data transfer interface. The system finally also includes a pharmacist component resident on a pharmacist's computer. The pharmacist's computer is adapted to interface with said patient component to transfer prescription data to said pharmacist component. At least one of or each of the physician component and the pharmacist component has the capability of searching a medication database to determine potential medication interactions with currently prescribed medications and identify those to the physician or pharmacist for selective downloading to the patient component so that the patient can be alerted to the potential interactions. The patient component has a scheduler which tracks a plurality of medication dose schedules and includes alarm functions to prompt a patient to take particular medications, reschedule them, and alert the patient to potential interactions between medications and/or provide caution information to the patient for administration of the medication.

Medication monitoring system and apparatus

A veterinary medication management system which includes two or three separate components to assist a handler/owner control, monitor and manage administration of prescribed medications to an animal patient. The system comprises a handler/owner component having a retrievable animal and handler/owner database of animal medical history, prior prescribed medications and current prescribed medications, and it includes a data transfer interface, e.g., a hardwired interface, such as an RS232 interface or infrared data transfer port. The system also includes a veterinarian component having a retrievable veterinarian's database of medication information and an input/output device enabling a prescribing veterinarian to enter prescription information into the veterinarian component. The veterinarian's database is capable of receiving and storing handler/owner data transferred from the handler/owner component through said data transfer interface. The system finally also includes a veterinarian support component resident on a veterinarian's computer. The veterinarian's computer is adapted to interface with said handler/owner component to transfer prescription data to said veterinarian support component. At least one of or each of the veterinarian component and the veterinarian support component has the capability of searching a medication database to determine potential medication interactions with currently prescribed medications and identify those to the veterinarian for selective downloading to the handler/owner component so that the handler/owner can be alerted to the potential interactions. The handler/owner component has a scheduler which tracks a plurality of medication dose schedules and includes alarm functions to prompt a handler/owner to administer particular medications to the animal, reschedule them, and/or alert the handler/owner to potential interactions between medications and/or provide caution information to the handler/owner for administration of the medication to the animal.

Veterinary medication monitoring system and apparatus

A portable system for reminding a patient and keeping track of the prescription and use of medications. The system comprises a portable unit and a software application program loaded in a PC-type computer. The portable unit consists mainly of a compact portable housing which contains an LCD display; audible alerts; pushbutton controls; battery power; and electronic circuitry to receive, store and display data. The portable unit can be programmed with dosage information regarding the particular medication, track when a particular medication has been taken, and sound an alarm when time to take another dose. The portable unit also checks for contraindications and warns of adverse reactions the patient would have with a particular drug or if a particular drug cannot be mixed with another drug presently being taken by the patient. The portable unit can receive, store, and display a patient's medical history, which can be downloaded from a PC-type computer loaded with the software application program that allows the computer to receive, store and download information regarding a patient's medical history and contraindication table. An enhancement is possible for the blind such that an audible voice informs the patient to take a particular pill number.
