Apparatus and method for automatically preparing large mailings in which one or more documents are nested within the fold of a letter sheet prior to insertion into an outer envelope. One or more unfolded letter sheets are transported to a folding operation involving a clamp assembly and a roller folding assembly which is movable into engagement with the clamp assembly. After folding and prior to stuffing into an envelope, one or more inserts can be inserted within the folded letter sheet.

Apparatus and method for automated mail

An insertion machine has a stationary table for holding inserts, and a linearly movable table for receiving and holding envelopes. The moving table jogs left or right to align the insert and envelope so that the insert may be pushed into the envelope. A parallelogram drive mechanism has a first pair of belt drives which form vertical parallel arms. As the table moves back and forth, the length of the parallel vertical drive mechanism does not change appreciably so that the ends of the vertical arms float up and down. There is no need for sliding gears, shafts, or the like to transfer power to the table. A second pair of belts drive the vertical belts from a stationary point at a center of the side of the parallelogram which is opposite the table. The second pair of drive belts enables the lower ends of the first pair of drive belts to float up or down slightly without causing any dislocation as a result of table movement.

Insertion machine drive

Sheets are fed from the top of a stack (12) by a continuously rotating vacuum wheel (40). After the leading edge of a just-fed sheet is detected, a control circuit (110) de-energizes valve means (92) whereby the wheel (40) is effectively disconnected from a source of vacuum (90). Indicia borne on the just-fed sheet is read using a probe (23). If the indicia indicates that the just-fed sheet is related for grouping purposes to previously-fed sheets, the control circuit (110) energizes valve means (92) whereby vacuum is applied to the wheel (40) for the feeding of a further sheet. If the indicia indicates that the just-fed, just-read sheet is not related to previously-fed sheets, the control circuit (110) does not energize the valve means (92) for the feeding of a further sheet until the control circuit (110) receives an indication that all previously-fed sheets have been grouped and discharged onto an insert track (32). The valve means (92) comprises two electrically-actuated solenoid valves (94, 96) connected in parallel between the source of vacuum (90) and a vacuum transfer block (42).

Sheet feeding apparatus and method

An edge loading cassette holder/loader utilizes an improved ejector/release control arrangement wherein the cassette is loaded narrow end first through a loading receiver opening into a holder/loader platform. The control arrangement includes a first pivotally mounted control arm that is biased to pivot the arm to partially eject the cassette for removal and that also functions as a release control member for the platform. A second pivotally mounted control arm that moves with the first arm and functions as a release member for the platform is also provided. The platform is pivotally movable between an upper loading position and a lower operative position wherein the cassette hub sprockets are engaged by transport drive spindles. The platform is biased to the lower operative position and is moved to the upper loading position by the second control arm. As the cassette is inserted into the platform, the cassette engages the first control arm and pivots the first and second control arms until the second control arm releases the platform to the lower operative position. In the operative position, the control arms are retained in the pivoted position by the platform. An ejection lever pivots the platform upward. At a predetermined pivoted position of the platform, the second control arm is released and the cassette is partially ejected out the loading receiver opening by the first control arm. A bumper is utilized to contact the cassette to prevent excessive ejection force.

Cassette handling apparatus with improved control arrangement

The illustrated embodiment teaches a three-way valve system for an ink jet printer. The system has an inlet, a main outlet, a vent, and two needle valves (a shut-off valve and a vent valve) which sit in respective valve guides. The passageways are arranged so that for ink to reach the outlet or vent, it travels through the shut-off valve seat and guide. Similarly, to reach the vent, fluid must pass through the vent valve seat and guide. The shut-off valve and vent valves are arranged to reciprocate through the action of a lever with a fulcrum between the two needle valves. The lever is connected to an actuator solenoid and an opposing bias spring. For opening of the valve system, the solenoid pulls the lever to shut the vent valve, thereby permitting the pressurized ink to lift the shut-off valve off its seat. When the shut-off valve is seated, a smaller area is exposed to pressure than when it is not seated. Therefore, the ink exerts a greater force on the opened shut-off valve. This greater force is communicated by the lever to seat the vent valve even more firmly. This is called self-energization. Decisive closing of the system occurs due to the vent arrangement permitting fluid in the passageways after the shut-off valve is seated to open the vent valve and exit through the vent.

Three-way needle valve

An improvement in an ink jet printing system which uses a catcher or gutter to intercept drops of ink deflected from the ink jet printing stream. The ink drop catcher serves to remove the drops of ink which have collected on the face of the catcher by means of capillary paths extending from the face of the catcher to a porous block. The porous block may be connected to a vacuum souce for removing the ink from the printing head.

Ink jet catcher

A device for feeding address labels on a web with the address labels arranged in a column, each address label equal in size to adjacent address labels. There are non-addressed areas at equally spaced distances along the web, with the non-addressed areas separated by the address labels. There are two cutters placed after the web feeder. The first cutter operates after each increment of the web. The second cutter operates only after an increment of the web wherein the web is fed the distance of an address label plus the height of a non-addressed area. The non-addressed area is cut from the address label and removed, and the cut address label is affixed to the mail piece. The device provides for incrementing the web either a distance equal to an address label or a distance equal to an address label plus the height of a non-addressed area. The web feeding and cutting is synchronized with the application of the labels to the mail pieces, with the movement of the mail pieces through the web application area also synchronized with the web feeding and cutting.

Label feeder for fan folded documents

A motion picture projector having a forward and reverse film transporting drive, an assembly for sensing a predetermined film tension condition and a mode controller for selecting various operational modes is provided with a control for selectively actuating a rewind mode of operation at a predetermined film tension condition. The selectively actuated rewind control arrangement includes a controller conditioner mechanism that is responsive to film tension and effective to position the controller from a predetermined projector operating mode such as a normal forward mode to a predetermined operating mode such as still when the predetermined film tension condition is sensed. A rewind mode actuator mechanism responsive to the controller conditioner mechanism is provided to control the film transporting drive in the rewind mode upon the operation of the controller conditioner mechanism. The rewind mode actuator mechanism in one arrangement includes a translating member for converting a linear displacement of the controller conditioning mechanism to a rotational movement which is connected to rotate a coupling rod carrying a displacing actuator. The displacing actuator displaces a reverse drive actuator in the film transporting assembly to condition it in a rewind mode.
