It is desirable to increase the modulus of rubbers utilized in a wide variety of applications. For example, it is typically desirable to increase the modulus of rubber compounds which are utilized in tire tread base compositions and in tire wire coat compounds. Unfortunately, most conventional techniques for increasing the modulus of a rubber compound are detrimental to other rubber properties, such as hysteresis and cut growth resistance. By utilizing the techniques of this invention rubber compounds can be prepared which exhibit high tensile strength, high modulus, and good cut growth resistance. The subject invention specifically relates to a process for preparing a highly dispersed blend of a polyester in an elastomer which comprises (1) blending a solution of a rubber in an organic solvent with a solution of a polyester in an organic solvent to produce a dispersion containing said rubber and said polyester, and (2) recovering the highly dispersed blend from the dispersion. This process can be used to increase the modulus of virtually any type of rubber including cis-1,4-polybutadiene, styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) polyisoprene, isoprene-butadiene rubber, isoprene-butadiene-styrene rubber (SIBR), nitrile rubber, and the like.

Rubber composition having high tenacity, high modulus and good cut

There is a growing demand for high molecular weight polyester resin. For instance, the market for high molecular weight polyethylene terephthalate resin is rapidly expanding. High molecular polyethylene terephthalate resin is currently being used in vast quantities in manufacturing bottles for carbonated beverages, trays for frozen foods which can be heated in either microwave ovens or convection ovens, and in tire cord. There is a growing trend toward higher molecular weights in many applications for such polyester resins. Unfortunately, it becomes progressively more difficult and expensive to produce polyester resins having higher and higher molecular weights utilizing standard commercial polymerization techniques. This invention discloses a technique by which polyester resin having extremely high molecular weight can be prepared utilizing a very rapid solid state polymerization process. This invention more specifically discloses a process for preparing ultra-high molecular weight polyester resin which comprises: (1) dissolving a polyester prepolymer in a suitable organic solvent; (2) recovering the polyester prepolymer from the organic solvent to produce a porous, fibrous mass of the polyester prepolymer; and (3) solid state polymerizing the porous, fibrous mass at an elevated temperature to produce the ultra-high molecular weight polyester resin.

A process by which polyester resin having extremely high molecular weight can be prepared utilizing a very rapid solid state polymerization process comprises: (1) dissolving a polyester prepolymer in a suitable organic solvent; (2) recovering the polyester prepolymer from the organic solvent to produce a porous, fibrous mass of the polyester prepolymer; and (3) solid state polymerizing the porous, fibrous mass at an elevated temperature to produce the ultra-high molecular weight polyester resin.

Preparation of ultra-high molecular weight polyester

Polyesters modified with acid or basic dyestuff acceptors suffer from low intrinsic viscosities and low melting points. By the present invention an insoluble, thermally stable surfactant overcomes the above shortcomings when such surfactant is incorporated into the polyester before, after, or preferably during polymerization.
