Water dispenser, which comprises, in addition to a water container, a filter element contained within a filter housing having an inlet and a dispensing outlet, a source of pressure and first valve and first conduit means for feeding water from the container to the filter housing inlet; means for feeding gas to the filter inlet to create gas pressure at the inlet, consisting of a reservoir, and the control means comprise the third conduit and valve means for permitting or preventing the admission of water into the reservoir, second valve and conduit means for controlling the level of the water in the reservoir, a pressure gauge for monitoring the pressure at the filter inlet; and control means for controlling the gas feeding means to cause or stop the feeding. The source of pressure may be a compressed gas cylinder provided with valve and conduit means for controlling the admission of compressed gas from the cylinder into the water container, and the means for feeding gas to the filter inlet comprise conduit and valve means for feeding gas to the inlet directly from the gas cylinder.

An apparatus and corresponding method for purifying water is described. The apparatus includes a supporting housing, a source of power, a filter device containing at least one interchangeable filter unit having one or more filter elements, a mechanism for driving water through the filter device and a timing mechanism for monitoring elapsed time of operation and a mechanism for monitoring cumulative volume of water having flowed through the filter device which are each coupled to a filter memory. The mechanism for driving water through the filter device includes a cylinder holder on which an interchangeable gas pressure cylinder can be mounted, a gas release mechanism housed in the cylinder holder, a flow regulator and conduits connecting the other components together.

Water purifying and dispensing apparatus

There is provided in accordance with the invention a method for filtering comprising the steps of: providing a filter assembly comprising a depth filter and at least one microporous membrane; determining an optimal fluid velocity of the filter assembly by the steps of: operating identical filter assemblies at different constant fluid velocities, each for a time duration which terminates when a given total pressure drop is reached thereacross; noting the total throughput for such time duration; and based on the total throughput for each of said different constant fluid velocities, establishing a functional relationship between fluid velocity and total throughput for said filter assembly; and operating the filter assembly at a constant fluid velocity which corresponds to a desired total throughput. In a preferred embodiment, the filter assembly has a selectable filter area and the method further includes the step of selecting the filter area for the filter assembly which enables a desired flow rate to be realized for operation of the filter assembly at the fluid velocity which corresponds to the desired total throughput.

Apparatus for plant cell tissue culture

The invention is a membrane comprising polymerized monomer and oligomer components. A primary membrane oligomer component is selected from acrylic polyester urethanes, and a secondary membrane monomer component is selected from 1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutylacrylamide and perfluoromonomers and perfluoroacrylic monomers. The membrane is further characterized as being microporous, permeable and having a thickness of less than 0.1 inches.

Hydrophobic microporous membrane

A method and a system are provided for protecting patients and equipment from the damaging effects of stray laser light emissions. Porous barrier materials are selected to have a pore geometry functionally related to the wavelength of emitted laser so as to cause destructive interference of the light beam when the beam encounters the porous material.

Laser beam resistant materials

The starting materials for the practice of the present invention are (1) one or more organic monomers or oligomers which upon irradiation very rapidly undergo a polymerization reaction to form a solid polymer; and (2) a liquid vehicle in which the one or more organic monomers or oligomers are soluble but in which the polymer formed is insoluble. For the manufacture of microporous membrane in accordance with the invention the monomers or oligomers are dissolved in the liquid vehicle, the resulting solution is formed into a thin layer, and the thin layer of the solution is then irradiated as with ultraviolet or electron beam radiation whereupon the rapid polymerization reaction immediately ensues and the polymer formed immediately segregates from the vehicle thereby resulting in microporous membrane from which the vehicle can be removed as by evaporation or washing. Because the radiation-induced polymerization reaction and the segregation of the polymer formed are so rapid, the membrane formed has cells and communications therebetween of very small dimensions thereby providing the microporous structure. Where ultraviolet radiation is used the solution also includes a photoinitiator.

Method for manufacturing microporous membrane

According to the present invention there is provided a novel type of membrane unit for use in electrodialysis comprising a heat-sealable frame framing and forming an integral entity with an electrodialysis membrane. The frame may be a regular frame, or a two-frame structure framing a single membrane. The invention further relates to electrodialysis devices such as stacks, bags, cells, spiral units and the like based on such membrane units, which are hermetically bonded by heat-sealing to similar units or to polymeric or other members.
