A method and apparatus for controlling the tension and position of a web roll being wound from a continuous traveling web, including a pair of winding drums supporting the winding roll in a pocket, positioning a pair of rider rolls with a looped belt span therebetween above the pocket on a beam and first pressing downwardly on the winding roll with a first rider roll, thereafter with the tensioned belt spanning the rider roll and the web roll, and thereafter with the belt and both rider rolls, while controlling the tension in the belt.

A paper web slitter having upper and lower slitter heads supporting cooperating rotary slitter blades, and wherein the lower slitter heads and blades together with appurtenances are of such narrow profile that the paper web is adapted to be separated into unusually narrow strips. In particular, the lower slitter heads carry motors which have driving connection on driving axes normal to lower slitter blade spindles supported in stable bearings in journal boxes on the generally triangular narrow profile standards on the lower slitter heads.

A gate station incorporates air pressure flows to direct clips in a production stream through the station and to selectively divert defective clips into a separate reject steam. Mounted on a support plate in the station are an upstream manifold, continuously supplied with low pressure air, and a downstream manifold, having a plurality of downwardly directed air ports and selectively supplied with high pressure air. Air flow from the upstream manifold is directed laterally over the upper surface of a clip so as to enable atmospheric pressure to maintain the clip travelling through the gate station in the production stream. If a clip is to be diverted, the downstream manifold is injected with high pressure air causing blasts of high velocity air through the downwardly directed ports. This high velocity air disrupts the flow from the upstream manifold and forces the leading edge of the defective clip downwards, pressing the clip into the reject stream.

A piling assembly for a sheet stacker utilizes air pressure to corrugate a paper sheet for stiffness and to transport the sheet from a conveyor onto a pile formed against a backstop. The assembly is comprised of a plurality of telescoping rods which overlie the sheet pile and issue air jets in a downward and lateral direction onto the upper surface of a sheet. The mechanism further includes a lift means situated beneath the sheet and directing air against the undersurface of the sheet, so that the sheet can float over the pile as the sheet is jogged against the backstop in the stacker. The backstop is made movable and the telescoping rods are adjustable to accommodate various lengths of sheet in the stacker.

Rigid support for adjustable slitter blade heads enables permanent factory setting of slitting overlap and the rake and toe-in angles. The upper blade is mounted on its blade head for both radial and axial movement relative to the lower blade without requiring resetting of the blade overlap and rake and toe-in angles. The blades are replaceable without requiring resetting of the blade cutting overlap and rake and toe-in angles. Full adjustment of the blade supporting heads across the web path is provided for. Setting efficiency is greatly improved.
