A battery for a vehicle that includes a housing comprising a top portion and a cover coupled to the top portion. The battery also includes a plurality of containers extending below the top portion and arranged in a plurality of rows, with each of the plurality of rows comprising a plurality of containers and being offset from an adjacent row. A portion of the top portion is not provided above one of the plurality of containers and includes at least one rib for providing enhanced strength for the portion of the top portion.

A housing for a vehicle battery includes a top portion configured for attachment to a battery cover and a plurality of containers extending from the top portion for containing elements of a battery. The plurality of containers are arranged in an offset configuration such that at least a portion of the top portion extends away from the plurality of containers due to the offset configuration. A structure for reinforcing the portion of the top portion is provided that extends away from the plurality of containers. According to one embodiment, the structure includes at least one rib for providing enhanced structural integrity for the portion of the top portion.

An improved vent cap system for use in an electrochemical battery is provided which includes a ring flange for forming a ring seal between the vent cap assembly and the fill tube. When the vent cap assembly is positioned in the battery housing, the ring flange and the fill tube deform to create a seal therebetween to provide a fluid tight seal.

Terminal straps are positioned within a battery container via multiple formations formed integral to the battery container. The unique formations provide for positive location of the terminal straps relative to the battery container and the battery container lid simplifying the manufacturing process and improving product quality.

Method and apparatus for positioning a battery terminal strap

A battery cover and vent cap interface seal for electrical storage batteries is disposed between the vent opening in the battery cover and the vent cap to establish a fluid-fight seal. In a first embodiment an annular sealing member is provided in each vent opening in the battery cover. The sealing members extend slightly beyond the inner periphery of the vent opening in the cover and are compressed by the vent cap plugs as the vent cap is installed. In a second embodiment annular sealing members are provided around each plug on the vent cap. The sealing members extend slightly beyond the outer periphery of the plugs and are compressed as the vent cap is installed on the battery cover. The sealing members are made of a resilient material that deforms more easily than the materials used for the battery cover and vent cap.

A removable strip adapted to be placed in a gas tight relationship with the top of a battery enclosure housing a plurality of channels and providing gaseous communication from a plurality of battery cells to a flame arrester located internally in the battery.
