An electrolyzer for electrolysis of aqueous solutions of alkali metal chlorides, comprising a horizontal casing filled with an electrolyte and two end monopolar electrodes placed therein. The casing of the electrolyzer is a cylinder made from a corrosion-resistant nonconducting material, its bases being secured to the bases of the monopolar electrodes, thus forming a tight cylindrical chamber.

Solid electrode electrolyzer for electrolysis of aqueous solutions

The proposed electrolyzer comprises at least two electrodes having current-distribution supports, whereupon there are mounted electrode members. In said electrolyzer, at least one of the electrodes comprises at least two units having current-distribution supports, whereupon there are mounted electrode members which are joined together along the side edges of their current-distribution supports, the interconnected current-distribution supports of the units making up the current-distribution support of the electrode.

Electrolyzer

The proposed electrode unit of an electrolyzer for electrolysis of solutions of halogenides of alkali metals comprises a current-distribution support to which there is electrically coupled at least one open-work or perforated electrode member at whose working surfaces there is released gas in the course of the electrolysis of solutions of halogenides of alkali metals. The open-work or perforated electrode member is so arranged in relation to the current-distribution support that its working surfaces are at a certain angle to the vertical plane extending perpendicularly to the plane of the current-distribution support on the side of the electrode member.

Electrode unit

A graphite-base filling material for the decomposition of alkali metal amalgams, said material containing titanium carbide and incorporating the ingredients in an amount between 69 and 35 wt % for the graphite and between 31 and 65 wt % for the titanium carbide. The method of producing the material disclosed consists in that a carbon filler, a carbon-containing binding agent and titanium or titanium carbide or titanium oxide are intermixed. The titanium or said titanium compounds is used in an amount between 24.8 and 52 wt %, the titanium carbide or titanium oxide being taken in terms of titanium. The mixture obtained is moulded and the blanks moulded are fired at a temperature between 500.degree. and 1200.degree. C. Next, the blanks fired are graphitized at a temperature between 1700.degree. and 1800.degree. C.
