A biosensor including a capillary chamber having an inner boundary, a working electrode including an effective working electrode portion positioned within the capillary chamber, and a counter electrode including an effective counter electrode portion positioned within the capillary chamber, and with the working and counter electrodes each having a neck that constitutes the sole portion of the electrodes that extends across the inner boundary and out of the capillary chamber. In one embodiment, the effective working electrode portion defines an average working electrode width, and the working electrode neck defines a working electrode neck width that is reduced relative to the average working electrode width. In another embodiment, a ratio between the area of the effective working electrode portion exposed to the capillary chamber and the area of the effective counter electrode portion exposed to the capillary chamber is substantially constant as a position of the inner boundary of the capillary chamber is varied along a length of the working and counter electrode necks.

Electrode configuration for a biosensor

The present invention provides an electrochemical sensor that employs multiple electrode areas that are exposed for contact with a body fluid, e.g., when the sensor is inserted subcutaneously into a patient's skin. The exposed electrode areas are arranged symmetrically, such that a symmetrical potential distribution is produced when an AC signal is applied to the sensor. The sensors in accordance with these teachings can advantageously be used with AC signals to determine characteristics of the sensor and thus improve sensor performance. These teachings also provide a biocompatible sensor with multiple reference electrode areas that are exposed for contact with body fluid.

Reagent matrices and methods are disclosed for improving the stability of test elements with respect to degradation by humidity in the air. The reagent matrices and methods are based upon using an effective amount of a deliquescent material to decrease the sorption of water from the air by other components of a reagent matrix. When the test element is a glucose-specific test strip, and the reagent matrix can include a glucose dehydrogenase enzyme and/or a flavin adenine dinucleotide cofactor, a nitrosoaniline mediator, and a film former, where the deliquescent material may include a salt such as sodium chloride in an amount effective to absorb water from the atmosphere at a rate that is faster than the rate at which the other components of the reagent matrix absorb water from the atmosphere.

Matrix stability compositions, test elements, test systems and methods of use thereof

The blood glucose analysis technique and system described herein address the issue of hematocrit interference when rapidly detecting glucose concentrations. It addresses this issue by using a differential pulse voltammetry technique in which short high, frequency voltage pulses are applied to keep the diffusion layer within the reagent of the working electrode, and the pulses are applied in a limited voltage window (or range) that is below the peak, diffusion-limited current. The readings below the peak are then used to determine glucose concentrations. With this technique, glucose concentrations can be determined relatively fast (e.g., within 5 seconds) and independently of the hematocrit levels of the fluid being analyzed.
