Method and apparatus for controlling and particularly for reducing the retention rates of viscous impregnate or coating materials on fibers, strands or textile ribbons are disclosed. The impregnated or coated material is submitted to successions of compressions and decompressions. Drainage of the viscous material is effected in the decompression intervals which separate the compression intervals.

Adjustment of the quantity of impregnating or coating material

Impregnated or coated linear material, for example, coated glass fibers, are dried in one or more calibrated spaces which control the percentage of impregnate or coating. A sweeping device moves the material laterally assuring complete sweeping and hence self-cleaning of the calibrated spaces.

Control of impregnant or coating material

Microwave heating apparatus especially useful for heating and curing reinforced thermo-hardenable synthetic resins is disclosed. Heating cells are formed by parallelepipedal enclosures, the walls of which are odd multiples of 1/4 the wavelength of electromagnetic energy being utilized for heating. Adjustment means for adjusting the enclosure to minimize reflected power are mounted within the enclosure. A production line comprises a series of successive heating cells that are supplied from the same power source; die structures between the cells can be used to form the material being processed.

Multimodal resonant cavity for very high frequency heating

Apparatus and method for the continuous manufacture of structural shapes are disclosed. Mineral fiber material in the form of continuous strands, webs, or mats, impregnated with a heat-hardenable resin, is passed through a dielectric heater. The material is shaped as it passes through metallic dies that are disposed within the dielectric heater. The electric field between the electrodes of the heater is reduced or shunted at the location of the dies. The heater is arranged so that the maximum electrical field occurs adjacent the entrance to the heater.
