In one embodiment, a method includes applying Forward Error Correction (FEC) to data at power sourcing equipment, transmitting the data and pulse power over a wire pair to a powered device, identifying data transmitted during power transitions between a pulse power on time and a pulse power off time in the pulse power at the powered device, and applying FEC decoding to at least a portion of the data based on said identified power transitions.

Transmission of pulse power and data over a wire pair

A network interface device operates in a normal transmit operating mode in which the network interface device continually receives transmission symbols from a link partner via the communication link. The network interface device determines that receive circuitry of the network interface device is to transition to a low power mode in response to receiving a sleep signal from the link partner. The network interface device then operates according to a quiet/refresh cycle of the low power mode to conserve power. The quiet/refresh cycle corresponds to a time schedule that includes a refresh time window in which receive circuitry of the network interface device is to be powered to receive a refresh signal from the link partner Immediately after transmission of the sleep signal, the network interface device transitions to a quiet time window of the time schedule in which the network interface device ignores transmissions from the link partner.

Energy efficient ethernet (EEE) operation

A network interface device operates in a normal operating mode in which the network interface device continually receives transmission symbols via a communication link. The network interface device determines that the network interface device is to transition to a low power mode, and in response transitions receiver circuitry to the low power mode. During a transition time period corresponding to determining that that the network interface device is to transition to the low power mode, the network interface device ignores signals received via the communication link.

In one embodiment, a method includes transmitting multi-phase pulse power from power sourcing equipment to a powered device in a data center, wherein the multi-phase pulse power comprises multiple phases of power delivered in a sequence of pulses defined by alternating low direct current voltage states and high direct current voltage states, and synchronizing the pulses at the power sourcing equipment with the pulses at the powered device.

Multi-phase pulse power short reach distribution

In one embodiment, a method includes transmitting pulse power on two wire pairs, the pulse power comprising a plurality of high voltage pulses with the high voltage pulses on the wire pairs offset between the wire pairs to provide continuous power, performing low voltage fault detection on each of the wire pairs between the high voltage pulses, and transmitting data on at least one of the wire pairs during transmittal of the high voltage pulses. Data transmittal is suspended during the low voltage fault detection.

Transmission of pulse power and data in a communications network

In one embodiment, an apparatus includes an interface for transmitting pulse power and data to a powered device over a wire pair and a controller for receiving input identifying power transitions in the pulse power and suspending data transmission during the power transitions. A method is also disclosed herein.

In one embodiment, a method includes transmitting data on two wire pairs carrying pulse power, wherein the pulse power comprises a plurality of voltage pulses with the voltage pulses on the wire pairs offset between the wire pairs to provide continuous power and identifying transitions between at least one of a pulse-on time and a pulse-off time, and a pulse-off time and a pulse-on time on at least one of the wire pairs. Data transmission on the wire pair is controlled during the identified transitions on the wire pair to prevent interference between the pulse power and the data.

An Ethernet transceiver is disclosed. The Ethernet transceiver includes transceiver circuitry including transmit circuitry, receive circuitry, and adaptive filters. The transceiver circuitry is configurable to operate in one of two low-power modes. A first low-power mode includes update operations for the adaptive filters. A second low-power mode includes turning off at least one of the transmit circuitry and the receive circuitry, and omitting update operations for the adaptive filters.

Energy efficient ethernet with multiple low-power modes

Methods of performing a multi-disturber alien crosstalk limited signal-to-noise ratio test are provided in which at least one signal-to-alien crosstalk noise ratio is determined for a victim link segment using a composite power spectral density for at least a first of a plurality of disturber link segments. The composite power spectral density comprises a combination of portions of a plurality of power spectral densities that are associated with line rates at which the first of the plurality of disturber link segments may operate.
