A method of preparing a mechanical component with an Fe&#x2014;Cr&#x2014;C hardfacing weld overlay alloy for improving the resistance of the mechanical component to abrasion, erosion or erosion/corrosion for use in very abrasive, erosion or erosive/corrosive environments by significantly increasing the hardness of the weld overlay is disclosed. To improve the resistance to abrasion, erosion or corrosion, a weld overlay of a Fe&#x2014;Cr&#x2014;C hardfacing alloy is applied onto the surface of a metallic component, such as tubes, pipes, or vessels. Welding and cladding methods including gas-metal-arc welding (GMAW), gas-tungsten-arc welding (GTAW), and laser cladding may be utilized. Then, the component is heat-treated at elevated temperatures for a sufficient time, resulting in additional hardening and thus further increasing the weld overlay's resistance to abrasion, erosion, or erosion/corrosion.

Process and method to increase the hardness of Fe-Cr-C weld overlay alloy

An inert gas nitrogen mixture is used as a shielding gas to prevent weld hot cracking in superalloys containing zirconium and/or boron. The gas mixture preferably contains argon and about 2 to 8% by volume nitrogen. Test data show excellent results are obtained when gas tungsten arc welding HAYNES 214 alloy which normally contains boron and zirconium and a minimal content of titanium.

Shielding gas to reduce weld hot cracking

A corrosion resistant metal alloy having improved formability and workability is disclosed which alloy contains in weight percent about 25% to 45% nickel, about 12% to 32% chromium, of at least one of 0.1% to 2.0% columbium, 0.2% to 4.0% tantalum, and 0.05% to 1.0% vanadium, up to about 0.20% carbon, about 0.05% to 0.50% nitrogen, about 0.001% to 0.02% boron and the balance being iron plus impurities and wherein the carbon and nitrogen content are controlled so that the amount of free carbon and nitrogen defined as ##EQU1## is greater than 0.14% and less than 0.29%. The alloy may also include in limited amounts one of aluminum, titanium, silicon, manganese, cobalt, molybdenum, tungsten, zirconium, yttrium, cerium and other rare earth metals.

Nitrogen strengthened FE-NI-CR alloy

A corrosion resistant metal alloy having improved formability and workability is disclosed which alloy contains in weight percent about 25% to 45% nickel, about 12% to 32% chromium, of at least one of 0.1% to 2.0% columbium, 0.2% to 4.0% tantalum, and 0.05% to 1.0% vanadium, up to about 0.20% carbon, about 0.05% to 0.50% nitrogen and the balance being iron plus impurities and wherein the carbon and nitrogen content are controlled so that the amount of free carbon and nitrogen defined as ##EQU1## is greater than 0.14% and less than 0.29%. Nitrogen strengthened Fe-Ni-Cr alloy

Disclosed is a sulfidation-resistant alloy. The alloy preferably may contain about 27% each cobalt and chromium, 8% iron, 2.7% silicon and the balance nickel plus normal impurities found in alloys of this class. The alloy is eminently suitable for applications in high temperature, hostile environments generated by many industrial processes, such as refinery, chemical processing and power generations.

Sulfidation-resistant Co-Cr-Ni alloy with critical contents of silicon

This invention relates to components of ceramic kiln and furnace hardware made of NICRALY alloys. Disclosed is a method of heat treating NICRALY alloys to obtain a uniform film of desired alumina (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3) on the surface of the alloys. The gist of the invention resides in the control of the critical relationship between the temperature and the partial pressure of oxygen in the oxygen potential controlled atmosphere during the heat treatment. Optimum results are obtained when the temperature is about 2100.degree. F. and the dew point is about -30.degree. F. in hydrogen for about one hour.
