A modified asphalt composition comprises or is produced from asphalt and phosphorous acid. The composition optionally further comprises one or more of an ethylene copolymer that comprises copolymerized units derived from ethylene and an epoxy-containing comonomer and a nonreactive polymer such as a styrene/conjugated-diene block copolymer. Further provided are processes for producing the composition in addition to products such as paving materials and roofing materials that comprise the compositions.

Modified asphalt using phosphorous acid

In a process for producing a cross-linked asphalt/polymer composition ('polymer-modified asphalt' or PMA) that comprises or is produced from asphalt and an ethylene copolymer, an anhydride is used as a promoter. The ethylene copolymer comprises copolymerized units derived from ethylene and an epoxy-containing comonomer. An improvement in asphalt properties is demonstrated without the use of an acid catalyst.

The encapsulant layer comprises the blend composition or the product of cross-linking the blend composition, in which some acid groups of the second olefin have reacted with some epoxy groups of the third olefin.

Cross-linkable ionomeric encapsulants for photovoltaic cells

A multilayer film comprises a layer consisting essentially of a fluorinated copolymer resin film and a layer consisting essentially of a blend of two ethylene copolymers. The first ethylene copolymer comprises copolymerized units of ethylene, optionally a first olefin having the formula CH&#x2550;C(R)COR, and a second olefin having the formula CH&#x2550;C(R)COOH. The second ethylene copolymer consists essentially of copolymerized units of ethylene, optionally a first olefin having the formula CH&#x2550;C(R)COR, and a third olefin having the formula CH&#x2550;C(R)D. The multilayer film is useful as an integrated frontsheet or backsheet for photovoltaic modules. Methods for preparing the multilayer film and the photovoltaic modules are also included.

A safety laminate comprises an interlayer that comprises a crosslinkable blend of ethylene copolymers. The first ethylene copolymer comprises copolymerized units of ethylene, optionally a first olefin having the formula CH&#x2550;C(R)COR, and a second olefin having the formula CH&#x2550;C(R)COOH. The first ethylene copolymer is optionally at least partially neutralized. The second ethylene copolymer consists essentially of copolymerized units of ethylene, optionally a first olefin having the formula CH&#x2550;C(R)COR, and a third olefin having the formula CH&#x2550;C(R)D. R, Rand Rrepresent hydrogen or an alkyl group; Rrepresents an alkyl group; and D represents a moiety containing an epoxy group. The crosslinkable blend is useful as an interlayer in safety laminates. Methods for preparing the safety laminates are also provided.

A multilayer film comprises a layer consisting essentially of a fluorinated copolymer resin and a layer consisting essentially of an ethylene copolymer ionomer blend. The ethylene copolymer ionomer blend, or the product of crosslinking the blend, can be used as an encapsulant layer for solar cells, and the multilayer film is useful as a component of photovoltaic modules. Methods for preparing the multilayer films and the photovoltaic modules are also described.

Disclosed is a multilayer film laminate comprising a layer consisting essentially of a fluorinated copolymer resin and a layer consisting essentially of an ethylene terpolymer. The ethylene terpolymer layer can be used as an encapsulant layer for solar cells and the multilayer laminate is useful as a component of photovoltaic modules. Methods for preparing photovoltaic modules are also included.

A solar cell module comprising a solar cell layer and an ionomer sheet comprising a sodium/zinc mixed ionomer that is the neutralization product of a precursor acid copolymer; wherein the precursor acid copolymer comprises copolymerized units of an &#x3b1;-olefin having 2 to 10 carbon atoms and about 20 to about 30 wt % of copolymerized units of an &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid having 3 to 8 carbon atoms based on the total weight of the precursor acid copolymer; wherein the precursor acid copolymer has a melt flow rate of about 70 to about 1000 g/10 min, as determined in accordance with ASTM D1238 at 190&#xb0; C. and 2.16 kg; and wherein when about 40% to about 90% of the total content of the carboxylic acid groups present in the precursor acid copolymer are neutralized to carboxylate groups to comprise carboxylate groups and counterions that consist essentially of sodium ions, the resulting sodium ionomer has a freeze enthalpy that is not detectable or that is less than about 3.0 j/g, when determined by differential scanning calorimetry in accordance with ASTM D3418.

The present invention relates to high performance wire and cable compositions and to hot melt adhesives containing a silyl-grafted ethylene copolymer having particularly low levels of glycidyl acrylate monomer. The preferred epoxy glycidyl methacrylate copolymerized into the polymer backbone provides a graft site for the aminosilane. Subsequent moisture crosslinking at the silyl site of the thermally stable graft copolymer provides compositions with attractive physical properties for wire and cable semicons, insulation, and jackets, as well as hot melt adhesives. The preferred aminosilane is N-cyclohexylaminopropyl trimethoxysilane.
