A chassis for mounting sub-rack modular units is disclosed that includes a frame defining a forward opening through which modular units are inserted to attach to the frame, a first backplane attached to the frame and that operates to provide a first functionality to one or more attached modular units that are coupled to connectors of the first backplane, and a second backplane attached to the frame and that operates to provide a second functionality to one or more attached modular units that are coupled to connectors of the second backplane, wherein the second functionality is different than the first functionality.

Multiple-backplane implementations for modular platforms

Mobile network services are performed in a mobile data network in a way that is transparent to most of the existing equipment in the mobile data network. The mobile data network includes a radio access network and a core network. A first service mechanism in the radio access network breaks out data coming from a basestation, and performs one or more mobile network services at the edge of the mobile data network based on the broken out data. These services may include caching of data, data or video compression techniques, push-based services, charging, application serving, analytics, security, data filtering, and new revenue-producing services, as well as others. This architecture allows performing new mobile network services at the edge of a mobile data network within the infrastructure of an existing mobile data network.

Mobile network services are performed in a mobile data network in a way that is transparent to most of the existing equipment in the mobile data network. The mobile data network includes a radio access network and a core network. A breakout component in the radio access network breaks out data coming from a basestation, and performs one or more mobile network services at the edge of the mobile data network based on the broken out data. These services may require the use of keys. Keys are stored and retrieved from a non-volatile key storage in a way that assures subsystems that need the keys have access to the keys. The keys retrieved from the non-volatile key storage are stored in a shared memory in the requesting subsystem, which allows any applications that requires access to the keys to directly access the keys in the shared memory.

A fail-to-wire (FTW) module preserves a primary data path connection from an upstream computer to a downstream computer if there is any kind of failure in a breakout data path to a breakout system. The FTW module provides switches between the incoming data network data and the breakout system such that when the breakout system encounters a failure, the switches are de-activated to bypass the breakout system. The switches in the FTW module are activated by a system health signal controlled by a health monitor in the breakout system. The health monitor provides intelligent switch control based on alerts from a variety of control points. These control points include firmware, hardware, thermal sensors, subsystem operating systems, subsystem software applications, and appliance tamper logic in order to determine if the FTW module switches should be in an active or inactive state.

The call can be automatically reconnected when the mobile unit exits the communication dead zone. As part of the orderly disconnection, parties to the call are given an audible and/or visual message and/or sensual tactile stimulus letting them know that a dead zone is being approached. The message can also indicate the time before entering the dead zone, and/or what actions will be taken. Similarly, when the mobile unit is about to exit the dead zone, the parties can be given an indication prior to being reconnected.
