The present invention provides a regenerable catalyst composition suitable for entrapping SO. The composition of the invention comprises a copper oxide having the formula (Cu/(A oxide) where A oxide is SiO, Zr&#x2014;SiO, AlO, TiO&#x2014;AlO, ZrOand InOor mixtures thereof. Copper loading may vary from about 10 to 60 mol % and is preferably about 25 mol %. In another embodiment of the present invention, an irreversible SOtrap capable of collecting SOunder lean conditions is provided. The traps of this embodiment include praseodymia, zirconia-praseodymia and mixed manganese-yttria and mixtures thereof.

A system is described for improving engine and vehicle performance by considering the effects of exhaust conditions on catalyst particle growth. Specifically, engine operation is adjusted to reduce operating in such conditions, and a diagnostic routine is described for determining the effects of any operation that can cause such particle growth. Further, routines are described for controlling various vehicle conditions, such as deceleration fuel shut-off, to reduce effects of the particle growth on emission performance.

The invention is a mixed oxide oxygen storage material useful as a catalyst or catalyst washcoat. The mixed oxide is praseodymium oxide loaded onto a support of either cerium oxide or cerium-zirconium oxide. The praseodymium oxide is loaded on the support so that the resultant mixed oxide contains praseodymium and cerium in a molar ratio of 1:4 to 4:1. This mixed oxide may be loaded with a catalyst like palladium for use in automotive exhaust gas systems.

A method of milling a cerium-rich material for oxygen storage and oxygen release in an exhaust gas catalyst. The present invention provides a method of preparing a cerium-rich material that has enhanced oxygen storing and releasing properties for exhaust gas systems. The invention includes providing the cerium-rich material having oxides of about 60 wt. % ceria and oxides of about 40 wt. % lanthana and neodymia, and using high energy vibratory mechanical milling at a predetermined oscillation frequency and amplitude for a predetermined duration to preprepare the cerium-rich material until the cerium-rich material is at a substantially uniform molecular mixture of ceria, lanthana, and neodymia, by which the cerium-rich material's property of storing and releasing oxygen are enhanced.
