Method of making a composite casting involves providing a reinforcement insert with a ceramic coating, positioning the coated insert in a mold, and casting the molten metallic material into the mold where the metallic material is solidified. The composite casting produced includes the reinforcement insert disposed in a solidified metallic matrix with a ceramic coating between the reinforcement insert and the matrix.

An amorphous alloy having a composition consisting essentially of about 45 to about 65 atomic % Zr and/or Hf, about 4 to about 7.5 atomic % Ti and/or Nb, about 5 to about 15 atomic % Al and/or Zn, and the balance comprising a metal selected from the group consisting of Cu, Co, Ni, up to about 10 atomic % Fe, and Y intentionally present in the alloy composition in an amount not exceeding about 0.5 atomic %, such as about 0.2 to about 0.4 atomic % Y, with an alloy bulk oxygen concentration of at least about 1000 ppm on atomic basis.

Yttrium modified amorphous alloy

An amorphous alloy having a composition represented by the formula (Zr,Hf)(Al,Zn)Ti,Nb,TaY(CuFe(Ni,Co))wherein a ranges from 45 to 65 atomic %, b ranges from 5 to 15 atomic %, e and f each ranges from 0 to 4.5 atomic %, g ranges from greater than 0 to 2 atomic %, h ranges from 0 to 0.5 atomic %, and the balance is d and incidental impurities and wherein e+f+g ranges from 3.5 to 7.5 atomic %, d times y is less than 10 atomic %, and x/z ranges from 0.5 to 2.

Tantalum modified amorphous alloy

A method for forming extremely strong ceramic-to-metal joints is provided which is particularly applicable to the formation of components for internal combustion engines. The present method simultaneously brazes a ceramic to a metal and creates a normallized microstructure and desired mechanical in the metal in a single heating step. The ceramic is metallized, a suitable alloy is applied, and the ceramic-alloy-metal composite is first heated to about 160.degree. F. to 1750.degree. F. for about one hour and then gas quenched in nitrogen or argon, or a gas with similar heat transfer capabilities.
