A message alert system is useful for a communication device () having a display () and a processor (). The message alert system includes a computer-readable medium () and a routine stored in the computer-readable medium () and configured for execution by the processor (). The routine includes a first routine that receives a message having a message type, and a second routine that generates a display item () for the display () of the communication device () in accordance with the message type such that the display item () comprises information indicative of the message type of the received message and whether further messages of the message type have been received by the communication device (). The routine may further includes a memory check routine that determines whether storing the message in the computer-readable medium () would result in exceeding a predetermined amount of the capacity of the computer-readable medium (). The routine may still further include a routine that analyzes the message to determine a size thereof. In such an embodiment, the second routine generates the display item in accordance with the size of the message.

Message alert system and method of providing message notification

The present disclosure includes a discussion of an operating technique for a radiotelephone (101). The radiotelephone (101) has a memory (907), a display (127) and a keypad (117) which includes a first function key (107), a second function key (109), and a plurality of data keys (119). An actuation of the first function key (107) creates a first function key signal for recalling a telephone number. Once the telephone number has been selected, a subsequent actuation of the first function key (107) creates a second function key signal for connecting a call based on the telephone number. During the call, an actuation of the second function key (109) creates a third function key signal for disconnecting the call. A subsequent actuation of the second function key (109) creates a fourth function key signal for turning off the radiotelephone (213).

Radiotelephone operating technique

A radiotelephone (101) has a memory, a display (127) and a keypad (117) with at least one key (121) to produce at least a first function key signal and a second function key signal, and a plurality of data keys (119). First, a first function key creates a first function key signal, turning on the radiotelephone (209); second, a phone number is selected (215). Third, the first function key creates a second function key signal from said first function key, activating the radiotelephone to call the phone number (207). Fourth, a second function key creates a third function key signal disconnecting the radiotelephone from said call (211). Fifth, the second function key creates a fourth function key signal turning off the radiotelephone (213).

Radio telephone operating technique

Japanese language symbols are entered into a telephone keypad for storage in subsequent name/number recall memory. The kata-kana symbol matrix is used to represent the Japanese language. The matrix is stored in memory and selected keys on a keypad are used to progress through the matrix to identify selected entries within the matrix.
