The combination of a PCB surface mount receptacle and a miniaturized coaxial connector vertically mated therewith. The receptacle comprises a dielectric housing defined by a plurality of upstanding walls from a base, means for surface mounting the receptacle to the PCB, a grounding contact clip to be received therein, and a signal contact pin exposed within the interior of the receptacle. The connector comprises a T-shaped housing consisting of a first housing portion to be received in the grounding contact clip, and a second housing portion extending perpendicular thereto. The T-shaped housing further includes a central cavity extending axially through the second housing portion and transversely through the first housing portion. The cavity further contains an electrically isolated contact for engagement with the signal contact pin. Finally, the first housing portion further includes a pair of end extensions which cooperate with means in the receptacle to ensure mating alignment of the connector with the receptacle.

Vertically mounted cable plug

A micro-miniature coaxial cable connector and surface mount receptacle assembly is provided that has a positive locking mechanism (60) for holding the cable connector in engagement with the receptacle without increasing the force needed to separate the connector assembly. The locking mechanism (60) has a body (62), a pair of arms (66) extending from one end of the body, and a latch (68) extending from an opposite end of the body. The body (60), the pair of arms (66), and the latch (68) are made from a spring material and are of unitary construction. The locking mechanism (60) is arranged so that when it is in locking position securing the cable plug connector (12) and receptacle (14) in assembled engagement, the arms (66) straddle a portion of the cable plug connector (12) and engage the base (26) of the housing (16) of the receptacle, the latch (68) latchingly engages one of the side surfaces (56) of the housing, and the body (62) substantially covers an opening (32) in the top surface (30) holding the cable plug connector (12) and receptacle (14) in assembled engagement.

Micro-miniature coaxial connector with positive locking member

This invention is directed to a low profile coaxial cable connector assembly for edge mounting to a planar electronic device, such as a printed circuit board, where electrical circuitry is provided thereon for electrically interconnecting to the assembly. The assembly comprises a dielectric housing having at one end thereof a pair of spaced-apart, parallel walls adapted to straddle and be secured to the planar electronic device, and at the opposite end thereof a cavity for the reception of an electrically terminated coaxial cable. Within the other end a grounding contact clip is provided having a pair of parallelly extending spring metal arms for receiving the terminated coaxial cable, and a signal contact for mating with the terminated coaxial cable. The grounding clip and signal contact further include extensions therefrom for electrically interconnecting to said planar electronic device, where the extensions are exposed between the spaced-apart walls and may be soldered to complementary traces or pads on the surfaces of the planar electronic device.

Low profile edge mount connector

A coaxial connector 1 comprises, a conductive electrical contact 2 for connection with a signal conductor 7 of an electrical cable 6, a conductive shell 3 concentrically encircling the contact 2 for connection with a conductive shield 9 of the cable 6, insulation 4 concentrically between the contact 2 and the shell 3, a reduced diameter portion of the contact 2 for connection with the signal conductor 7, and impedance compensation is provided by a relatively enlarged diameter portion 25 of the insulation 4 receiving concentrically a relatively enlarged air gap 64 and the reduced diameter portion of the contact 2, and a reduced diameter portion 26 of the insulation 4 receiving concentrically an enlarged diameter portion 40 of the contact 2 and restraining the contact 2 from forward movement.

F series coaxial cable adapter

A testing device such as a network analyzer is joined to a test unit, such as a circulator, by an electrical precision test connector 1 having an electrical conductor 2 with conductive end portions 34 and 40, a hollow, bipartite shell 3 and a dielectric insert 4 as part of the conductor 2, the electrical conductor 2 further comprising a flexible, slotted contact end portion 24 with flat, opposing contact surfaces 36 and 37 with the slotted end portion being pinched 38 for a slideable, clamping engagement, above and below, with an inserted tab connector and the hollow, bipartite shell 3 having an end contact surface 24 and being spring biased to provide complete electrical contact with a corresponding portion of the test unit 54 during connection. The test connector 1 is characterized by a rear contact surface 24 having substantially a square profile with four flats 59, each disposed at ninety degrees around the annular face to permit the electrical conductor 2 to be withdrawn from a fixed plate 56 having interior flat surfaces 59A and the electrical conductor 2 rotated ninety degrees and replaced within the fixed plate 56 with flats 59 of its annular face fitted to the complementary flats 59A of the fixed plate 56 to prevent rotation of the conductor 2 and, consequently, misalignment within the said fixed plate 56. Further, the test connector 1 is characterized by an electrical conductor 2 with enlarged annular waist 4 which fits within the shell 3 to prevent rotational movement relative thereto.

Precision test connector

A testing device such as a network analyzer is joined to a test unit, such as a circulator, by an electrical precision test connector 1 having an electrical conductor 2 with conductive end parts 34 and 40, a hollow, bipartite shell 3 and a dielectric insert 4 securing the conductor 2 in place, the electrical conductor 2 comprising a flexible, slotted contact end portion 34 with flat, opposing contact surfaces 36 and 37 with the slotted end portion being pinched 38 for a slideable, clamping engagement, above and below, with an inserted tab connector and the hollow, bipartite shell 3 having an end contact surface 24 and being spring biased at 45 to provide complete electrical contact with a corresponding portion of the test unit 60 during connection.

A coaxial connector (1) in which a conductive housing (2) is provided with a projecting electrical terminal (8), a conductive shell (3) and an insulative body (4) are encircled by the housing (2), a central electrical contact (5) for transmitting an electrical signal is concentrically encircled by the insulative body (4), and an electrical terminal portion (33) of the contact (5) projects from the shell (2), and an extended axial stem portion (21) of the insulative body (21) projects outwardly from the conductive housing (2) and encircles the terminal portion (33) to provide a lengthy voltage creepage path and a lengthy voltage clearance path.

High voltage coaxial connector

A method and apparatus for attaching electrical contacts (23, 24) to the ends of electrical conductors (50). The method of the invention comprises the steps of providing a plurality of contacts (23, 24) at spaced locations along a flexible strip (22), feeding the strip (22) to an attachment station (14) for delivering contacts (23, 24) to the attachment station (14), attaching a contact (23, 24) to the end of an electrical conductor (50) in the attachment station (14), and separating the attached contact (23, 24) from the stip (22). The contacts (23, 24) are incorporated into contact assemblies (20, 20') which comprise a contact (23, 24) having dielectric insulating member (25) molded therearound and molded integral with the flexible strip (22). After attachment of a contact (23, 24) to a conductor, the attached contact assembly (20, 20') is cut from the strip (22) and the strip (22) is indexed to deliver the next contact assembly (20, 20') to the attachment station (14).

A kit of parts, comprising; a connector shell (7) for a coaxial cable (2) having a tool receiving cavity portion (11) open toward two orthogonal directions, a contact holder (14) and a cable holder (15), an insulative body (70) and a conductive cover (51) for covering the cavity portion (11) of the shell (7), and a conductive ferrule (38) for wedge fit assembly with the cable holder (15), the cover (51) having hooks (52,52) for engaging the shell (7), and the shell (7) having cover supports (12,12) for engaging and deflecting the cover (51) to a bent position.

Push on right angle connector

Coaxial electrical connectors for printed circuit board and coaxial cable applications which are composed of a plurality of relatively low cost component parts designed to permit the connectors to be easily assembled by relatively unskilled personnel without requiring complex assembly equipment. Connectors of the invention are assembled from component parts by a method which includes the steps of encircling a center contact (23, 71, 122, 208, 305) with a dielectric base (21, 209, 306) and a dielectric insulating member (24, 72, 121, 207, 303) while engaging an outwardly projecting portion (49, 205) of the center contact (23, 71, 122, 208, 305) with the base (21, 209, 306); assembling an electrically conductive outer shell (26, 73, 102, 123, 125, 206, 302) to the base (21, 209, 306) while concentrically surrounding the center contact (23, 71, 122, 208, 305) and the dielectric insulating member (24, 72, 121, 207, 303) with the shell (26, 73, 102, 123, 125, 206, 302); and securing an electrically conductive member (22, 203) to the shell (26, 73, 102, 123, 125, 206, 302), while the conductive member (22, 203) engages and transversely overlies the base (21, 209, 306) and while the base (21, 209, 306) engages the dielectric insulating member (24, 72, 121, 207, 303). The connector family includes plug (65, 110, 300, 320) and jack (10, 100, 120, 130, 200) connectors of the threaded (100, 110, 130, 320) and quick disconnect (10, 65, 120, 200, 300) types, connectors which are adapted to be mounted to printed circuit boards (10, 65, 100, 110, 120, 130) and connectors which are adapted to terminate coaxial electrical cables (200, 300, 320). The plurality of connectors of the connector family are designed to share one or more components with other connectors in the family permitting a reduction in inventory requirements and a savings in over all manufacturing costs.

Microcoaxial connector family

An electrical connector (10) comprised of intermating halves (12, 80) including snap rings (58, 150), a shroud (50) and sleeve (140) of geometries allowing blind-mating of the connector halves with both halves being readily snapped into block apertures (68, 130) of housings with sufficient axial float to assure proper mating with varying parts tolerances, and with the snap rings not bound by an axial spring element (106) employed to take up such tolerance.

An electrical connector assembly (1, 1', 100) having a conductive exterior shell (16, 16', 116) and a conductive intermediate shell (41, 41, 141) frictionally engaged by corresponding conductive contacts (49, 49, 149, 149) of the same construction in the form of strip form clips having electrical terminals (52, 52, 152, 152) projecting outwardly of an insulative body (2, 102) that positions the shells (16, 16', 41, 116, 141) with respect to the openings (14, 114) into which the contacts (49, 49, 149, 149) are inserted for latched engagement with the body (2, 102) and for electrical connection with the corresponding shells (16, 16', 41, 116, 141).

PCB mounted triaxial connector assembly

A coaxial connector 10 includes a conector body (21) and a plurality of grounding pin contacts (25, 25) extending from the connector body (21) to be extended into and through a plurality of apertures (32, 32) in a printed circuit board (12) to electrically and mechanically connect the connector (10) to the board (12). The grounding pin contacts (25, 25) have a length greater than the thickness of the board (12) and include first compliant pin contact portions adapted to be positioned within the apertures (32, 32) to frictionally engage the sidewalls of the apertures (32, 32) to frictionally retain the connector (10) to the board (12) and to electrically connect the connector (10) to the board (12), and second compliant pin contact portions (51, 51) which extend out of the apertures (32, 32) beyond the opposite side of the board (12) and which, upon, passing through the apertures (32, 32) expand to a diameter greater than that of the apertures (32, 32) to mechanically lock the connector to the board. The grounding pin contacts (25, 25) are formed integral with grounding pin contact means which is mounted to the outer shell (21) of the connector (10) after the compliant portions (51, 51) of the grounding pin contacts (25, 25) are formed to simplify manufacturing procedures and permit use of different materials for the grounding pin contacts (25, 25) and the outer shell (21).

Low profile press fit connector

A coaxial connector includes matable plug and jack connector members with the plug connector member including inner and outer shell members crimpably secured together along small diameter sections thereof to electrically connect an outer conductor of a coaxial cable therebetween while the center conductor of the cable is crimpably connected to a center contact member secured in a dielectric member within a large diameter section of the inner shell member. A hood section of the outer shell member includes an internal latching groove that matably connects with radiussed projections of spring contact members of a jack connector member when the plug connector member electrically mates with the jack connector member with center contact members of the plug and jack connector members electrically connecting with one another.
