A method of making a thin film magnetic head assembly having a substrate, superstrate and thin film magnetic transducer mounted therebetween wherein the thin film magnetic transducer includes conductive leads located interior to and extending between the substrate and superstrate comprising the steps of mounting a thin film transducer on the substrate with the transducing portion thereof located adjacent one edge of the substrate, positioning a preformed planar conductive connecting member formed of an elongated support section and a plurality of spaced, aligned connecting elements having a relatively thin coating of diffusable conductive metal coating located on one side positioned in intimate contact with the conductive leads with the connecting elements and the elongated support section extending past the substrate, placing a superstrate having a preformed layer of insulating bonding material affixed to one surface thereof in alignment with the substrate, thin film magnetic transducer and planar conductive connecting member with the preformed layer of insulating bonding material in intimate engagement with the connecting elements to form a sub-assembly thereof having a predetermined space which has a dimension equal to the sum of the thickness of one of the conductive leads, the planar conductive connecting member and the thickness of the diffusable conductive metal coating thereon and wherein the insulating bonding material is selected of a material which is electrically and magnetically compatible with the thin film magnetic transducer, controllably heating the sub-assembly to bond said thin film magnetic transducer, connecting elements and the conductive leads having the diffused electrical connection therebetween into a thin film magnetic head assembly is shown.

A thin film magnetic head assembly having a substrate, a thin film magnetic transducer mounted on the substrate and having a transducer portion which is planar with one treated edge of the substrate, a superstrate positioned in spaced parallel alignment from the substrate with the thin film magnetic transducer located therebetween and having a treated surface in planar alignment with the treated surface of the substrate and transducer portion of the thin film magnetic transducer and an insulating bonding material located in the space therebetween which encapsulates the thin film magnetic transducer and bonds the substrate and superstrate is shown.

A method of making a thin film magnetic head assembly having a spaced substrate and superstrate with a thin film magnetic transducer mounted therebetween by the steps of positioning at least one spacing member between the substrate and superstrate, placing a quantity of insulating bonding material of selected characteristics adjacent the spaced substrate and superstrate and controllably heating the substrate, superstrate, thin film magnetic transducer and spacing member sub-assembly to a bonding temperature located in a bonding temperature range and maintaining the sub-assembly at a bonding temperature to enable the bonding material to substantially fill the space by capillary action thereby encapsulating the thin film magnetic transducer bonding the substrate, superstrate and thin film magnetic transducer into an integral assembly is shown.

A multi-channel magnetic head-slider assembly having a ceramic member having a bottom slider face which is adapted to ride on a thin fluid film a predetermined distance above a moving media wherein the slider face has a hollowed out, central area having a wedge shaped inner surface formed in the interior of the bottom slider face which defines a first and second parallel planar fluid bearing support rail which extend in spaced parallel alignment along the side of the ceramic member and each of which have one end which terminates in sloped surface defining a leading edge relative to the moving media and each of which terminate in and are integral with a third flat fluid support surface forming a trailing edge which is perpendicular to said first and second fluid bearing support rails and a plurality of magnetic transducers having a preselected gap width and predetermined spacing are mounted on the end of the ceramic member at the trailing edge of the ceramic member with the gap of each head adjacent to and in alignment with said third flat support surface forming a plurality of tracks with a moving media wherein the width of each track is substantially equal to the preselected gap and the spacing between the tracks is substantially equal to the predetermined spacing between magnetic transducers is shown.
