Highly crimped, fully drawn bicomponent fibers, prepared by melt-spinning, followed by gas-flow quenching, heat treatment and high speed windup, are provided, as are fine-decitex and highly uniform polyester bicomponent fibers.

Method for high-speed spinning of bicomponent fibers

The present invention relates to methods for making polyamide filaments, such as nylon 6,6, having high tensile strength. The invention also relates to yarns and other articles formed from such filaments. The invention is particularly useful for providing a filament yarn with tenacity equal or superior to the prior art at high spinning process speeds while retaining the ability to draw the yarn. The invention further relates to providing a filament yarn extruded from a delustered or pigmented polyamide polymer.

Process of making polyamide filaments

A melt spinning apparatus for spinning continuous polymeric filaments including a first stage gas inlet chamber adapted to be located below a spinneret and optionally a second stage gas inlet chamber located below the first stage gas inlet chamber. The gas inlet chambers supply gas to the filaments to control the temperature of the filaments. The melt spinning apparatus also includes a tube located below the second stage gas inlet chamber for surrounding the filaments as they cool. The tube may include an interior wall having a converging section, optionally followed by a diverging section.

Apparatus and process for spinning polymeric filaments

Thermoplastics may be melt spun at high production rates, and without physical property degradation, by spinning a blend of the thermoplastic and a minor amount of a specified liquid crystalline polymer.

High speed melt-spinning of fibers

Yarns of melt-spun polymeric filaments are rapidly quenched, whereby the filaments are cooled by quenching gas that is accelerated along the threadline by being passed through a tube of reduced dimensions with the filaments before they emerge. In particular, a yarn is produced which has an elongation to break of about 100% or more. The yarn is comprised of filaments numbering from 25 to 150. The filaments are less than 4 denier per filament and makeup yarns having low denier spread.

Continuous filament yarns

This invention relates to a new nonwoven material which has very high Frazier permeability while having substantial hydrostatic head liquid barrier properties. The material is comprised of fibers which are approximately one denier and finer fibers which have sufficient strength properties so as not to need a support scrim. The fabric is quite comfortable because of its breathability, quite soft because of its construction, and protective from liquids from rain to hazardous chemicals.

Low or sub-denier nonwoven fibrous structures

An improvement is provided in the rapid quenching of melt-spun polymeric filaments, whereby the filaments are cooled by quenching gas that is accelerated along the threadline by being passed through a tube of smaller dimensions with the filaments before they emerge.

Spinning polymeric filaments

Improved polymeric membranes and their method of manufacture are disclosed. The improved membranes are produced by increasing the draw ratio employed during the manufacture of the membrane. The membranes show at least substantially constant or increased selectivity and mechanical properties as the draw ratio is increased.

A melt-spinning process for spinning polymeric filaments at a spinning speed controlled by a positive mechanical withdrawal means that increases the speed of the filaments to above 7,000 meters/minute whereby a drawing and necking down of the filaments occur below the spinning pack, directing a gas into a zone extending from the spinning pack to a location between the spinning pack and the withdrawal means, maintaining the zone under superatmospheric pressure of less than 0.03 kg/cm2 and increasing the velocity of the gas as it leaves the zone to a level greater than the velocity of the filaments to reduce the extent of necking down of the filaments.

Melt spinning process for polymeric filaments

Spinning of polyethylene terephthalate yarn at speeds in excess of 5000 meters per minute using a gas management technique of the gas surrounding the threadline to control the temperature and attenuation profiles of a spinning threadline provides a means to produce a low crystallinity polyester yarn with a relatively high elongation to break.

Low crystallinity polyester yarn produced at ultra high spinning speeds

A blend of low density polyethylene and crystalline polypropylene can be melt spun at high temperature and high speed to produce a fiber. The fiber has utility as a binder fiber in nonwoven fabrics. The blend contains 5 to 35% by weight polypropylene and 95 to 65% of polyethylene.
