A surgical instrument has an elongate support shaft, a tip assembly permanently attached to the shaft, a cutting jaw which opens in a backward facing direction and which is laterally offset from the longitudinal axis of the support shaft, and a rod extending coaxially with the elongate support shaft for applying closing and opening forces to the cutting jaw. The tip assembly comprises a stationary portion and a movable portion having respective tissue cutting edges which define the cutting jaw. The stationary portion of the tip assembly is permanently attached to the distal end of the support shaft, and the movable portion of the tip assembly is pivotally attached to a distal end of the stationary portion. The stationary portion of the tip assembly has a plurality of cutting edges which define an opening which extends axially adjacent the longitudinal axis of the support shaft. The movable portion has corresponding cutting edges which cooperate with the cutting edges of the stationary portion to define the cutting jaw. The cutting jaw has a fully open position in which the movable element extends outwardly from the longitudinal axis and toward a proximal end of the elongate shaft at an angle of approximately 60.degree.. The cutting jaw has a fully closed position in which the cutting element is disposed within the opening in the stationary portion of the tip assembly. The tip assembly has an overall height dimension, when the cutting element is in the fully closed position, which is substantially equal to a corresponding cross-sectional dimension of the elongate support shaft.

Surgical instrument

A surgical instrument includes a removable tip assembly having an elongated support member including a proximal end configured to be coupled to the handle and a distal end for insertion into a patient's body. The support member may either be straight or curved. The tip assembly also includes an operating unit coupled to the distal end of the support member, and a drive actuator having a distal end and a proximal end. The distal end of the drive actuator is pivotably coupled to the operating unit for moving the operating unit relative to the support member. The surgical instrument also includes a handle having a body portion formed to include an opening for receiving the proximal end of the tip assembly therein, a movable trigger configured to actuate the operating unit of the selected tip assembly, and a locking mechanism for removably coupling the selected tip assembly to the handle. The locking mechanism is movable from a first position to hold the selected tip assembly in a locked position relative to the handle to a second position to release the selected tip assembly from the handle and permit the removal of the selected tip assembly from the handle. The drive actuator can be rotated out of a slot in the handle while the tip assembly is assembled to the handle for cleaning, sterilization, and inspection. The support member, drive actuator, and operating unit cannot be disassembled from each other. Advantageously, the tip assembly may be removed and replaced. This permits replacement of a damaged tip assembly on site.

Endoscopic surgical instrument handle

A retractable surgical instrument having a transversely preformed, curved operative element extendible from a straight, linear sheath. The operative element is retained in the retracted position until the distal tip of the instrument has been positioned at a work site. Cutting edges on the curved operative element may be formed in a variety of styles, one such style being embodied as an arthroscopic knife wherein the tip of the knife blade is preformed such that it maintains a transverse curve when it is extended to an operating position. The cutting edges of the transverse knife blade may extend longitudinally from the protective sheath in which case the edges are spaced from the inside surfaces of the linear sheath by the cooperative action of a raised bearing surface on the knife and the edge of the sheath adjacent the concave side of the curve as well as by laterally extending edge protection projections.

Retractable surgical instrument with curved operative element

A retractable surgical or other instrument is provided with a locking mechanism automatically actuated by sliding an operating element forward to extend it from a protective sheath. The locking mechanism operates by the cooperative action of a plurality of abutment means integrally molded into the interior of the instrument handle and a plurality of transverse bends forming a substantially closed loop profile in the proximal end of the elongated support shaft of the operating element. A longitudinally slidable actuating pin engages the proximal end of the support shaft to move it longitudinally in a selected direction. A portion of the proximal end of the shaft is biased to exert a radially outward force on the inner wall of the instrument handle thereby assuring positive engagement between the support shaft and an abutment surface which prevents rearward motion of the surgical element once it is placed in an extended position. Additional abutment surfaces are provided to enhance the locking effect and additional bends are provided in the proximal end of the support shaft to enable the slide switch to overcome the radially outward bias in order to retract the surgical element when desired.

Retractable instrument

A tubular arthroscopic sheath having improved irrigating fluid flow characteristics and having a quick coupling socket adapted to quickly connect to and disconnect from an associated arthroscopic tool provided with a mateable, generally cylindrical plug member. The fluid flow is enhanced by centering projections on the sheath interior and by turbulence minimizing fluid ports. The socket comprises an open ended cylindrical housing provided with a plurality of annularly spaced, cylindrical locking pins slidable within throughbores in the housing wall, the throughbores extending radially from the housing axis and axially skewed with respect thereto. Each pin is provided with a notch in its cylindrical surface adjacent the most radially outward end of the pin. A pair of slidable coaxial cylindrical actuating members is adapted to engage all the notches and capture the pins. Moving the slidable actuating members away from the open end of the housing causes the pins to slide radially outwardly in the throughbores. Allowing a bias means to urge the actuating members toward the open end of the housing causes the pins to slide radially inwardly.

Arthroscopic sheath with quick coupling socket

A tubular arthroscopic sheath having improved irrigating fluid flow characteristics and having a quick coupling socket adapted to quickly connect to and disconnect from an associated arthroscopic tool provided with a mateable, generally cylindrical plug member. The fluid flow is enhanced by centering projections on the sheath interior and by turbulence minimizing fluid ports. The socket comprises an open ended cylindrical housing provided with a plurality of annularly spaced, cylindrical locking pins slidable within throughbores in the housing wall, the throughbores extending radially from the housing axis and axially skewed with respect thereto. Each pin is provided with a notch in its cylindrical surface adjacent the most radially outward end of the pin. A pair of slidable coaxial cylindrical actuating members is adapted to engage all the notches and capture the pins. Moving the slidable actuating members away from the open end of the housing causes the pins to slide radially outwardly in the throughbores. Allowing a biasing spring to urge the actuating member toward the open end of the housing causes the pins to slide radially inwardly.

A drill includes a plurality of lips with enlarged portions at one end defining heads therefore. The heads form frusto-conical surfaces and cutting edges extend from the frusto-conical surfaces to remove chips. The cutting edges are limited in size with respect to the frusto-conical surfaces to control the removal of chips and a pocket behind each head readily receives the shavings to convey the latter away from the one end.

An injector for molding machine capable of operation with a simple mold having few cavities at a total cycle of as little as one to five seconds, thereby accomplishing high speed production with a minimum number of mold cavities; the injector having a nozzle structure so arranged as to minimize heat transfer to the mold whereby the mold may be maintained at a temperature to effect rapid cooling and ejection of the molded part, while the molding material in the nozzle is maintained in a fluid condition; the rapid cycle of operation serving to maintain the desired nozzle temperature, also.

Fitting employing flexible plastic tubing with rolled back end

An elongate member, such as a tube, is perforated at intervals by intermittently feeding the member endwise through a perforating station containing a laser for directing a laser beam against the member, and pulsing the laser in timed relation to the intermittent movement of the member to produce a laser beam pulse of sufficient duration and intensity to form a hole in the member at selective times or each time when the member is arrested at the station. The particular member described is a thin walled flexible plastic drip irrigation tube which is flattened upon reaching the perforating station, preferably being pre-flattened, and which may have a single water passage defined by two walls, or which may have a primary water passage bounded by a first tube wall and a secondary water passage bounded by the first wall and a second outer tube wall. The laser beam pulses may be regulated in such a manner that the pulses penetrate only one wall of the two-wall type or, in the case of the three-wall type, so that certain of the pulses penetrate both walls to form holes in the first wall for communicating the tube passages, and the intervening pulses penetrate only the second outer wall to form water drip openings in the latter wall.
