A method carried out by an electronic device enabled to send and receive electronic messages over a network, including: determining if a new electronic message received by the device is part of a message thread that includes the new message and at least one prior electronic message previously received at the device; and if the new message is determined to be part of a message thread, comparing address information of the new message with address information of the at least one prior electronic message in the message thread to determine if there has been a change in addressed recipients between the new message and the at least one prior electronic message, and if so, providing a notification to a user of the device of the existence of the change.

A method is provided for reducing a number of keys that a user is required to depress on a device having a keyboard with a limited number of keys when the user enters a password. The method comprising the following steps. A subset of characters used to define the password is determined. A filter to apply to the keyboard is determined in accordance with the determined subset of characters. The filter is applied when the user depresses the keys. Devices and computer readable medium for implementing the method are also provided.

An improved handheld electronic device having a reduced keyboard provides facilitated language entry by making available to a user certain words that a user may reasonably be expected to enter. In some situations, certain words can be stored, for example, in a temporary dictionary for use in particular situations. For instance, the names of the recipients of an electronic message might be stored in a temporary dictionary for rapid retrieval when entering a salutation in the message. As another example, a number of the words in an existing electronic message may be stored in a temporary dictionary and made available to a user when replying to or forwarding the message since the existing message might include words that the user might reasonably be expected to type in the reply message or the forwarded message.
