An electrical wiring device comprising an insulated flat cable having a plurality of parallel electrical conductors disposed in a plane and encased in a flexible insulation with at least one connector assembly permanently attached for plug-in service is provided. Also provided is a method of making the device in which insulation-piercing interconnecting elements are passed through the insulation, have a tight bight of conductor formed outside the insulation and are permanently bonded to tines in each interconnecting element, and the associated parts are enclosed in a dielectric housing.

A vertical header with an integral housing surrounding a block through which straight pins extend. The pins project beyond one face of the housing that is adapted for mounting against a circuit board. Above the block, the housing and pins receive an electrical connector. At each end of the housing block, there is a latch member that extends upwardly from the block for engagement with a connector fitted into the housing.

A connector block having a row of terminal-receiving cavities separated by side walls extending between the top wall and bottom wall of the block and an integral locking bar running the length of the block along the top wall above the cavities and projecting above the top wall. The bar is forced down through the top wall and into the side walls and is welded to the side walls so that it extends into the cavities and confines terminals in the cavities.

Connector block

A header is provided for mounting on a circuit board comprising a block having a plurality of circuit board pins mounted therein and a generally rectangular unitary housing. The unitary housing and block have a face for mounting on a surface of a circuit board. The mounting face has a cavity at each end of the block for receiving a pair of latch members. Each cavity has a common wall with each end of the block, a recessed surface spaced from the face, and a wall spaced from the common wall having a rectangular channel therein. Also provided is a latch member for insertion in each cavity at each end of the block. Each latch member includes a base having a substantially rectangular member protruding from one side of the base, an elongated tapered latch arm extending from the base, a latch surface on the free end of the latch arm, and a latch release extending from the latch opposite the latch surface.

Headers with insertable latch members

A connector block molded of glass-filled thermo-plastic includes an integral gate extending along the ends of a row of cavities. The gate is connected to the block by a hinge portion having opposed resin rich surface layers and a rigid glass fiber-resin composite between the layers. Upon movement of the gate toward a position where it closes the adjacent ends of the cavities, one resin layer and the composite in the hinged portion break permitting retention of the gate about the remaining flexible layer to close the ends of the cavities.

A rigid connector block formed of molded filled thermoplastic material having a row of open ended cavities with rigid locking tongues entending from an exterior wall into adjacent pairs of cavities, the tongues integrally joining the exterior wall and side walls between the pairs of cavities.

A header is provided for mounting on a circuit board comprising a block having a plurality of circuit board pins mounted therein and a generally rectangular unitary housing. The unitary housing and block have a face for mounting on a surface of a circuit board. The face having a cavity at each end of the block for receiving a pair of latch members. Each cavity having a common wall with each end of the block, a recessed surface spaced from the face, and a wall spaced from the common wall having a rectangular channel therein. Also provided is a latch member for insertion in each cavity at each end of the block. Each latch member including a base having a substantially rectangular member protruding from one side of the base, an elongated tapered latch arm extending from the base, a latch surface on the free end of the latch arm, and a latch release extending from the latch opposite the latch surface.

A zero force edge connector block includes a plurality of terminals for engaging pads on a circuit board, an elongate cam bar extending along the terminals, and a drive for shifting the cam bar along the terminals so that the cam bar engages ramp surfaces in the block and is raised diagonally to engage the terminals and move the terminals to a retracted position. After the board has been positioned in the block, the cam bar is moved back to its initial position, thereby freeing the terminals to engage contact pads on the board.
