A multi-material injection molding machine includes stationary and moving platens holding cores and first and second injection units for delivering first and second molding materials. The moving platen is slidable towards and away from the stationary platen. Further provided is a rotational distribution unit movable between the stationary platen and the moving platen and defining first cavities on one side and second cavities on an opposite side. The first cavities are for mating with cores to define first mold cavities and the second cavities are for mating with cores to define second mold cavities. Also provided are a rotational actuator for rotating the rotational distribution unit and a molding material delivery apparatus for delivering one or more of the first molding material to the first cavities and the second molding material to the second cavities.

Multi-material injection molding apparatus and method

In-line valve-gated nozzles for a single or multiple cavity applications wherein a valve-gated hot runner nozzle has a melt channel uniformly heated along the entire path. The valve pin is driven by an actuation device that is located adjacent to the nozzle to regulate the flow of melt. The actuation device has a linear motion and applies a uniform axial pressure on to the valve pin. This valve-gated nozzle can be linked directly to a machine nozzle, to an injection manifold or to a stack mold.

A nozzle for an injection molding apparatus is provided. The injection molding apparatus has a mold component that defines a mold cavity and a gate into the mold cavity. The nozzle includes a nozzle body, a heater, a tip, a tip retainer, and a nozzle seal piece. The nozzle body defines a nozzle body melt passage therethrough that is adapted to receive melt from a melt source. The heater is thermally connected to the nozzle body for heating melt in the nozzle body. The tip defines a tip melt passage therethrough that is downstream from the nozzle body melt passage, and that is adapted to be upstream from the gate. The tip retainer is removably connected with respect to the nozzle body. The nozzle seal piece is connected with respect to the nozzle body. The material of nozzle seal piece has a thermal conductivity that is less than at least one of the thermal conductivity of the material of the tip and the thermal conductivity of the material of the tip retainer.

Nozzle for an injection molding apparatus

An injection molding system having a manifold nozzle connection that accommodates thermal expansion of the system. A manifold nozzle tubular connector is receivable at a first end within a manifold and at a second end within a nozzle and has a length that bridges a space between opposing surfaces of the manifold and nozzle. The first end of the tubular connector may be threadably and/or permanently attached within a manifold bore in a downstream surface of the manifold with the second end of the tubular connector being slidably received within a nozzle bore in an upstream surface of the nozzle or within a nozzle melt channel. Alternatively, the first end of the tubular connector may be slidably received within a manifold bore in the downstream surface of the manifold or within a manifold melt channel with the second end of the tubular connector being threadably and/or permanently attached within a nozzle bore in an upstream surface of the nozzle.

An injection molding apparatus comprises a manifold having a manifold channel for receiving a melt stream of molten material under pressure and delivering the melt stream to a nozzle channel of a nozzle. A mold cavity receives the melt stream from the nozzle and the nozzle channel communicates with the mold cavity through a mold gate. A thermocouple is coupled to the mold core of the mold cavity in order to measure the temperature of the molten material in the mold cavity.

A valve pin bushing for a hot runner includes a bushing body having a hole therethrough for receiving a valve pin and a rearward surface for contacting a back plate. A thermally insulative component is coupled to a forward surface of the bushing body. The thermally insulative component is made of a nonmetallic material having a thermal conductivity lower than that of the bushing body.

An injection molding system and injection molding method for making molded parts that include one or more planar heaters having a thin or a thick film resistive heater element coupled, secured, or releaseably secured to one or more sides of each of the one or more injection molding nozzles. The releasably secure coupling allows heater device to be visually inspected, tested, removed, and/or replaced. The planar heater device can have a support device patterned with a film electrical resistive path. The electrical resistive path can include any pitch or number of electrical resistance lines, such that a longitudinal uniform heat profile is generated along a melt flow channel of the one or more injection molding nozzles when the nozzles are in use. In some examples, the planar heater has more than one film resistive heater element that can be coupled to one or each side of a nozzle, with dielectric material interposed between the planar film resistive heater elements. This can allow for additional or alternative heating in various applications.

A nozzle system is provided for an injection molding machine. The nozzle system includes a nozzle tip that is removably connected to a nozzle body with a sealing and mounting sleeve element. The nozzle body includes a first connector for releasably connecting with a second connector defined on the sleeve. The sleeve element further includes an alignment bearing for engaging a bearing surface defined on the nozzle body for precisely locating the nozzle tip within the nozzle body along on a predetermined axis. Further embodiments of the invention provide a valve pin disposed in the nozzle body and nozzle tip. The valve pin includes a bearing surface for engaging a guiding surface defined on the second melt channel for aligning the end of the valve pin with a mold gate. Further embodiments also provide an integrally connected nozzle tip and sleeve element.

An injection molding apparatus includes a manifold for delivering a melt stream of moldable material to a nozzle melt channel of a nozzle. A valve pin extends through the nozzle melt channel and is axially movable to selectively open a gate to allow communication with a mold cavity. A sensor is coupled to a forward end of the valve pin. The sensor may be a pressure sensor and/or temperature sensor in direct contact with the melt stream to provide pressure and/or temperature information to a controller.

A control module is attached to a machine platen of an injection molding machine. The control module is coupled to at least one sensor that reports a value of a processing condition associated with an injection mold and is disposed within the injection mold. The control module is also coupled to at least one controllable device that varies the processing condition of the injection mold and is disposed within the injection mold. The control module collects and processes sensor output, and provides a control signal to at least one controllable device. A display interface module is linked to the control module. The display interface module accepts user-entered data set-points, provides the user-entered data set-points to the control module, and collects the processed sensor output from the control module for display to a user.

A modular hot runner nozzle having a variable length includes a first nozzle portion and a second nozzle portion provided in series between a manifold and a mold gate of an injection molding apparatus. The first nozzle portion and the second nozzle portion having respective nozzle channels for delivering the melt stream from the manifold to a mold cavity. A nozzle tip is provided at a forward end of the hot runner nozzle. The nozzle tip and the manifold are generally fixed within the injection molding apparatus so that axial thermal expansion is taken up by a telescoping or a slidable connection that is provided between the first nozzle portion and the second nozzle portion.

An injection molding apparatus includes combined sealing elements located between a nozzle head of an injection molding nozzle and a mold plate. The sealing elements are arranged so that they force the nozzle head toward an outlet surface of a manifold and provide a seal therebetween over a range of temperatures.

The invention relates to an injection molding apparatus including a mold block, a nozzle, a gating system and a slug heater. The mold block defines a mold cavity having a mold cavity inlet. The nozzle has a nozzle inlet. The nozzle inlet is fluidically connectable downstream from a melt source. The nozzle inlet is upstream from the mold cavity inlet. A melt flow passage extends from the nozzle inlet to the mold cavity inlet. The gating system includes a valve pin and an actuator. The valve pin is movable between an open position wherein melt flow is permitted into the mold cavity, and a closed position wherein the valve pin blocks the melt flow passage to prevent melt flow into the mold cavity. The actuator is operatively connected to the valve pin to move the valve pin between the open and closed positions. At least one of the mold block and the valve pin includes a cooling system for selectively solidifying melt to form a slug immediately upstream from the valve pin when the valve pin is in the closed position. In use the slug blocks the melt flow passage to substantially prevent melt leakage past the slug when the valve pin is positioned away from the slug.

Lateral gating injection molding apparatus

An injection molding apparatus includes an injection piston that is slidable within a nozzle having a movable valve gate pin. The injection piston is movable from a retracted position to an extended position in order to force melt towards a mold cavity. A valve is located at a forward end of the piston to selectively block communication between a recess, which is provided in an outer wall of the piston adjacent the valve, and a melt chamber of the nozzle. Movement of the injection piston from the retracted position to the extended position causes the valve to close so that the predetermined volume of melt located below the valve is forced into the mold cavity, when the valve gate pin opens the mold gate.
