An adjustable roller apparatus has a housing and a roller ball, rotatably mounted in the housing. There is also a base adjuster that is adapted to be moved from a first position to a second position and where one of the first and second positions of the base adjuster is a retracted position that permits the roller ball to contact a surface and rotate on the surface and the other position of the base adjuster is an extended position whereby the base adjuster contacts the surface.

An improved simulated climbing wall provides a self-regulating endless climbing surface. The structure includes a form including upper and lower at least partially cylindrical outer surfaces, a planar forward surface, and an open back surface. A continuous belt includes an inner surface and an outer surface. The inner surface is disposed in sliding engagement with the cylindrical surfaces and planar forward surface of the form, and the outer surface of the belt includes a plurality of raised features configured for climbing by a user. A tensioning shoe engages with the inner surface of the belt through the open back surface of the form, and a mechanism, coupled to the tensioning shoe, is operative to a) relieve tension on the belt as a user climbs upwardly, thereby increasing rotational slippage of the belt around the form, and b) increase tension on the belt as a user moves downwardly, thereby reducing or terminating rotational slippage of the belt around the form. In the preferred embodiment, a pair of pivoting levers are provided, each having one end coupled to a climber and a second end coupled to the tensioning shoe such that, as a climber ascends the belt, the levers are raised, reducing the frictional engagement of the inner surface of the belt against the form, and as a climber moves downwardly on the belt, the levers are lowered, increasing the frictional engagement of the inner surface of the belt against the form.

A unique system for distributing and sampling cosmetics is disclosed. The cosmetics which are normally dry, are combined with a liquid carrier and film forming agent and deposited onto a substrate. The film forming agent acts to microencapsulate the cosmetic and lightly bond the cosmetic to the substrate. When the film forming agent dries, it protects the cosmetic. Thus, the cosmetic can be applied to a substrate and covered with a paperboard sheet. Access to the cosmetic can be provided by a tear strip. Greasy cosmetics, such as lipstick, can also be applied to a substrate according to the present invention. These cosmetics are first microencapsulated with gelatin and the formed microparticles are secondarily encapsulated with a film forming agent and deposited onto a substrate. This method permits cosmetics to be distributed through the mail and as magazine inserts and the like.

An elongated body of molded plastics material has an end portion with longitudinally spaced and laterally extending temperature numbers overlying corresponding bands of liquid crystal compositions, and an elongated lens of transparent plastics material covers the numbers and compositions and is sealed to the end portion of the body around the compositions. In one embodiment, the compositions are carried by an aluminum strip or foil which has a center portion spaced within a cavity and opposite edge portions projecting to the outer surface of the body between the lens and the body end portion. In another embodiment, the body end portion has longitudinaly spaced cells or cavities for receiving the liquid crystal compositions in a slurry form, and in a further embodiment, the body is molded of a transparent plastics material and has an end portion which forms a second lens to provide a double-sided thermometer. Another embodiment has superposed or overlaid liquid crystal compositions which respond to different temperatures and form segments of digital temperature numbers.

Method of applying cosmetics to a substrate and article

A device for detecting thermal differentials emanating from a radiant source by transforming such differentials to visible representations that can be photographically recorded for subsequent diagnostical and analytical study. The device includes a light transmitting housing having one end supporting a resilient frame with a flexible thermally responsive screen an opposite end supporting a camera. The device is especially useful in the early detection of cancer or of other contralateral heat differentials in the body due to various abnormal or disease conditions or to monitor chemotherapy or progress of surgical recovery.

A method is disclosed for recording topological thermal data by scribing onto a thermographic indicator overlay thermograms produced by a thermochromatic band composed of temperature responsive liquid crystalline materials and temperature gradients of the thermograms determined with a surface thermometer having a plurality of display areas composed of thermochromatic compositions each exhibiting a distinct temperature event range spaced from the others by a temperature interval. Such method is especially adapted for application to the surface of the human body for the early detection of carcinomas as evinced by elevated temperature areas.

A pipe repair device has a tubular housing and an expandable seal. The tubular housing includes a central passageway extending along its longitudinal axis and opening on the opposite ends of the housing. A mechanism is provided at one end of the housing for attaching a conduit to the housing in fluid communication with the passageway. The expandable seals can comprise annular tubes of resilient material which are expanded to form a seal between the device and the pipe in which it is inserted by supplying fluid pressure to the tube interiors. A mechanism for supplying purge gas to the interior of the pipe adjacent the work area can be provided adjacent and downstream of the seals. When two seals are provided, an interstage volume is defined between the seals into which fluid may be conveyed and withdrawn. The device permits the fluid passing through the pipe to continue through and bypass the work area to avoid pressure build up at the seals, to completely isolate the work area from contamination from the pipe fluid and to permit continued operation or safe disposal of the pipe fluid.

Solidification of liquid crystalline compositions is retarded by incorporating therein compounds which are steroid derivatives of isostearyl carbonate. These novel carbonates which are quite stable to environmental factors such as ultraviolet light exposure, temperature changes, oxidation, etc., retard solidification of liquid crystalline compositions for extended periods of time. Moreover, these compounds, some of which of themselves exhibit color play, can be used in increasing amounts to increasingly narrow the color play range without noticeably decreasing the specular intensity of the color changes of liquid crystalline compositions.

Disclosed is an improved microform card which includes a wear-strip spacer element structure located on the card surface in one of several configurations, some containing coded secondary information. The wear-strip spacer elements separate the card surface from adjacent optical elements in a card utilizing apparatus by a distance sufficient to prevent the formation of colored Newton rings at the card-to-optical-element interface. Card utilization equipment capable of recognizing the presence of wear-strip spacer elements on a microform card and using any secondary information encoded thereon is also disclosed.
