An accumulator-dehydrator for use in an air conditioning system. The accumulator-dehydrator has a hollow delivery tube for delivering vaporized refrigerant and entrained oil to the compressor of the air conditioning system. The delivery tube has an expansion chamber and a separator to eliminate noise within the system.

A wobble plate compressor includes a non-rotary socket plate mounted on a journal of a rotary drive plate. The drive plate includes a bushing and a needle-type thrust bearing to accommodate relative rotary movement between the plates. The socket plate and drive plate are retained together by an assembly including a square-edged annular channel formed in a recessed journal, a thrust washer for engaging the journal and the bushing and a dished retaining ring. The dished retaining ring also includes square edges mating with the adjacent sides of the channel. The retaining ring engages the thrust washer so as to provide a preload force to seat the washer on the journal and for biasing the socket plate against the thrust bearing. The retaining ring is characterized by a three degree dish angle when compressed between two flat parallel surfaces with an applied load of 30N.

An electromagnetic clutch having a bearing supported pulley provided with a compact rotor, coil and coil housing arrangement having precisely controlled and maximized air gap areas with the compactness characterized by allowing the inner diameter of the pulley to approach the outer diameter of the coil and the precise controlling and maximizing of the air gap areas characterized by the formation of a close tolerance radial air gap at substantially the outer diameter of the bearing.

An electromagnetic friction-type clutch (brake) is provided with a multiple armature ring and spring mounting arrangement which operates to effect an air gap across the flux path during disengagement to dissipate residual magnetism and thereby allow a relatively small release force to complete the disengagement.

A lightweight electromagnetic clutch adaptable for use with an air conditioning compressor including a rotatable electromagnetic coil and pulley assembly and an armature plate forming part of a magnetic flux circuit. An annular dish-shaped member is joined in back-to-back relation with a rotatable coil housing to provide a unitary flux carrying driven structure with the radially outer portion of each defining a driven pulley belt receiving groove. The radially inner portion of the dish-shaped member together with the coil housing inner wall and a support casing fixed tubular extension define a bearing cavity wherein the dish-shaped member and the bearing provide, with the housing, composite flux paths for the magnetic circuit.

Electromagnetic rotating coil clutch

The electromagnetic clutch illustrated is adaptable for use with an air-conditioning compressor and includes a rotatable electromagnetic coil and pulley assembly and an armature plate which form part of a 4-pole magnetic flux path. A slip ring is secured to the coil housing, and a spring-loaded brush means is secured to the compressor for sliding engagement with the slip ring. A clutch rotor is secured to an end of the inner coil housing wall adjacent the armature plate and extends radially outwardly from said inner wall so as to provide an uninterrupted circular air space with the outer coil housing wall adjacent the armature plate, such that no shorting of the lines of flux can occur from the end portion of the outer wall to the clutch rotor, providing a faster and stronger attraction of the armature plate when the electromagnetic coil is energized.

The electromagnetic clutch illustrated includes an electromagnetic coil assembly, an armature plate, and a pulley assembly having cylindrical end portions with an intermediate groove portion, and a hub portion, all of which form part of a 4-pole magnetic flux path. A non-magnetic ring member is mounted in support relationship between the groove portion and the pulley hub. A clutch rotor is secured to an end of the pulley hub adjacent the armature plate and extends radially outwardly therefrom so as to provide a uninterrupted circular air space with the cylindrical end portion adjacent the armature plate, such that no shorting of the lines of flux can occur from the end portion to the clutch rotor, providing a faster and stronger attraction of the armature plate when the electromagnetic coil is energized.

A room air conditioning unit has an air flow guide mechanism which provides an oscillating-type of air sweep louvered grill for the unit discharge duct. A motor with suitable gear reduction supplies power to a double acting barrel cam having a curved surface matching the radius of the center of rotation of the grill assembly to a point of contact of a follower fixed to the air conditioner unit front cabinet housing. The cam has a groove receiving the follower to transmit the desired amount of movement to rock the guide mechanism about a horizontal axis to provide a vertical air sweep. An eccentric pin on the cam drives a vertical louvered actuating rack to generate horizontal air sweep. The cam follower may be disengaged from the cam groove when vertical air sweep action is not desired.
