A hierarchical protection switching framework uses detectors and protectors. A protector registers with a detector to receive notifications. A detector identifies a condition and the interested protector, and notifies the interested protector. The protector in response to the notification, typically either performs protection switching or notifies another protector of the condition. This protection switching is an extensible operation, and typically may include, but is not limited to switching traffic to a backup facility from a facility corresponding to the condition and switching traffic to a backup component from a component corresponding to the condition. The decision of a protector whether to notify another protector of the condition can be made based on different factors, such as, but not limited to a failure of the protection switching by the protector, a database lookup operation to identify whether notification of another particular condition has been received or not received, etc.

Hierarchical protection switching framework

Systems and methods include providing a router that may be deployed as multiple logical routers that share a common fast interconnect. These logical routers may functionally serve as core routers, peering routers, aggregation routers, etc. A further aspect of the system and methods is that the resources assigned to a logical router are allocated from a pool potentially including multitude of hardware cards. A further aspect of the system and methods is that a logical router may be independently managed by the owner of the router or by an owner of the logical router.

A data processing method comprising establishing a first node in a peer-to-peer data communications network, wherein the node is configured as a supernode in conformance with a peer-to-peer communications protocol, wherein the first node is configured as an active listener to one or more network routing protocols executing at a network router; receiving a routing information message from one of the network routing protocols; modifying an operational characteristic of the first node in response to the routing information message; receiving a request from a second node in the peer-to-peer network for a resource that is known to the first node; and responding to the request based on the modified operational characteristic. For example, a peer-to-peer node may be configured as a network-aware BitTorrent Tracker, Gnutella supernode, etc., and can use IGP and BGP information from a router to determine how the node behaves.

Modifying operation of peer-to-peer networks based on integrating network routing information

An end-to-end approach is provided for developing and maintaining network device management applications. The approach includes an XML-based development environment for network device management applications that uses Management Data API (MDA) schemas that define a hierarchical data model for components supported by a network device. The XML-based development environment also uses XML schemas to define a common XML-based interface used by management applications to access management data maintained on the network device. The approach provides programmatic access to network device management data and management data schema with an XML-based data model and interface that is consistent across all network device components. The approach includes mechanisms for automatically generating XML requests that conform to a hierarchical data model from requests that conform to a table-based data model. The approach also includes mechanisms for automatically extracting data from XML replies and conforming to the table-based data model.

An embodiment of the present invention works in conjunction with a ring topology network in which a node in the network can identify a problem with a connection between the node and a first neighbor. The nodes do not need to maintain a topology map of the ring, identifying and locating each node on the ring, for effective protection. Additionally, independently operating ring networks can be merged and the protection protocol will appropriately remove a protection, such as a ring wrap, to allow the formation of a single ring. It also provides for multiple levels of protection priority so that protection for a high priority failure, such as a physical break in a connection, would remove protection for a low priority failure, such as signal degrade, on another link.
