A molten metal pump includes an impeller, a pump base housing at least partially enclosing the impeller, a shaft connected to the impeller, a motor connected to the shaft, a motor mount plate for supporting the motor; and a post for connecting the motor mount plate to the pump base housing. The molten metal pump can include a connector that connects the post to the motor mount plate. The molten metal pump can include a socket for connecting the shaft to the motor. The shaft can comprise an assembly including an elongated metal rod having a first end and a second end and a metal non-circular drive member attached at the second end of the elongated metal rod. The impeller can include a cap member having a plurality of generally polygonally shaped inlet openings communicating with internal passages of the impeller, each inlet opening having an inner wall and an outer wall, the outer wall being longer than the inner wall, each inlet opening also including a leading wall and a trailing wall, the leading wall and the trailing wall each interconnecting the inner wall and the outer wall and each being inclined such that an uppermost edge of each wall precedes a lowermost edge of each wall in a first rotational direction.

Molten metal pump

The present invention relates generally to an apparatus for degassing, submerging, agitating and pumping molten metal. More particularly, the present invention relates to a mechanical apparatus for moving or pumping molten metal such as aluminum, zinc or magnesium. Specifically, the present invention is related to a drive for such an apparatus in which a motor is positioned above a molten metal bath and rotates a vertical shaft. The lower end of the shaft drives an impeller or a rotor to impart motion to the molten metal.

Molten metal post assembly

A molten material pump includes an impeller housed within a base member of the pump. A plurality of grooves are defined in a peripheral sidewall of the impeller for either drawing a molten material into the base member's chamber or pushing molten material out of the base member's chamber. The impeller is rotated by a rotatable shaft connected to an upper surface of the impeller. The rotatable shaft includes a non-circular shaped lower end dimensioned to be received within a cooperating opening in the impeller. The molten material pump further includes a connecting assembly for interconnecting components of the molten material pump. The connecting assembly includes a first mounting member attached to a first pump component that is dimensioned to be fitted within a cooperating recess of a second mounting member attached to a second pump component. In another embodiment of the invention, a stub shaft connects an upper shaft portion of the shaft to the impeller. The stub shaft includes a universal joint that is not rigidly connected to the upper shaft portion. In addition, the universal shaft is configured to allow the stub shaft and impeller to pivot. A floating deflector block weighs on an upper sealing block of the pump for enhancing the seal at the pump's bearing surfaces.

Pump for molten materials with suspended solids

An apparatus for moving a stream of molten metal comprising a pumping member, a housing at least partially enclosing the pumping member, a power device seated on a support, and a shaft connecting the power device and the pumping member. At least one post is disposed between the support and the housing. The post includes an elongated rod comprising a metal alloy surrounded by an outer sheath. An inner member may surround the rod and provide a molten metal resistant barrier. The rod includes a first end connected to the support and a second end secured to the housing. A similar design for a shaft is also provided.

Shaft and post assemblies for molten metal apparatus

An apparatus for moving a stream of molten metal comprising a pumping member, a housing at least partially enclosing the pumping member, a power device seated on a support, a shaft connecting the power device and the pumping member. At least one post is disposed between the support and the housing. The post includes an elongated rod surrounded by a heat resistant outer member. The rod includes a first end connected to the support and a second end secured within a cavity in the housing.

A coupling mechanism for a molten metal processing system includes an elongated shaft having an upper axial end and a lower axial end. A passage having a torque facilitating shape extends through at least a portion of the shaft. The upper end of the shaft tapers inwardly and forms a tapered seat. At least one channel is machined into an outer surface of the upper end of the shaft. The channel has a first portion extending longitudinally downward from a top surface of the shaft and a second portion extending from the first portion at an angle greater than 90&deg; relative to the first portion. A coupling member, for coupling the shaft to a drive system, includes a body having an annular wall which defines a cavity. At least one locking member is disposed on an inner surface of the annular wall which is adapted to cooperate with the channel in the shaft. The locking member is aligned with the first portion of the channel and the shaft is slid into the cavity. When the locking member reaches a bottom surface of the first portion of the channel, the shaft is turned less than one third of a rotation so that the locking member travels partially across the second portion of the channel thereby pulling the shaft upward. The cavity of the coupling member tapers outwardly forming a mouth which engages the tapered seat of the shaft in a sealing relationship.

Universal coupling

A molten metal impeller having a base portion including a circumferential notch. The notch having a generally radial wall and a generally axial wall, at least one of the radial or axial walls including a plurality of grooves. A ceramic bearing ring is cemented into the notch.

Molten metal shaft and impeller bearing assembly

A molten metal pump for transferring molten metal from a first vessel to a second vessel. The pump is constructed of a base member including a pumping chamber, a motor supported by at least one post, a rotatable shaft secured at a first end to said motor and at a second end to an impeller disposed within said pumping chamber. The pumping chamber includes an outlet to a first end of an elongated refractory tube having a longitudinal axis substantially parallel to the shaft. The tube has a second end passing through an opening in the platform. The tube includes a metallic cladding attached to an outer wall adjacent it's second end. A releasable fastening member is used to secure to the portion of the tube having the metallic cladding to the platform.

Molten metal transfer pump

A molten aluminum pump comprised of an impeller attached to a vertical rotary shaft, the shaft forming a connecting portion between a motor and the impeller and being comprised of a refractory material without a radial bearing surface. The impeller is housed within a pumping chamber of a base member wherein rotation of the shaft and impeller draws molten aluminum into the chamber and forces the molten aluminum through an outlet in the chamber. The motor is secured to the shaft with a rigid coupling and at least one bearing journaling the coupling.

Bearing arrangement for molten aluminum pumps

An elongated shaft suited to a molten metal environment which forms a connection between a rotor and an impeller. The shaft being formed with at least one end, in cross-section, having a plurality of rounded side portions with a relatively large radius and rounded corners having a relatively small radius connecting the side portions.

Molten metal pump with vaned impeller

A molten metal pump having an elongated shaft with an impeller disposed adjacent the end of the shaft and a means for rotating the shaft. The impeller is formed with an imperforate substantially circular base surrounded by a bearing and has a surface facing toward the shaft. At least two imperforate vanes are connected to and extend substantially perpendicular from the surface and radially from the shaft or a hub securing the shaft toward a peripheral portion of the base. The vanes are spaced apart at terminal inlet ends along their entire radial dimension to create an inlet area comprised of the axial opening between adjacent vanes at the terminal ends and an outlet area comprised of a radial opening between adjacent vanes along the axial direction of the vanes. Each vane has a leading edge with a distal portion adjacent the periphery of the base portion which forms an angle of less than about 100.degree. relative to a tangent to said circular base drawn at the center of the vane.
