An acoustic imaging device for providing an image of a body in a medium, includes a plurality of acoustic transmit elements and a plurality of acoustic receive elements, an apparatus for activating one of the transmit elements to generate an ultrasonic signal, an apparatus to selectively receive and record from each of the receive elements a set of data representing a phase, amplitude and transit time of the ultrasonic signal, a first computing apparatus for calculating a velocity map of propagation velocity values in each of a plurality of volume elements including the body and the medium using the data set, and a second computing apparatus for calculating a reflectance map, including a coherent sum of reflectance values at selected points in the plurality of volume elements using the data set.

High-resolution three, dimensional ultrasound imaging device

An improved biconical horn antenna having a broad azimuthal beamwidth and an asymmetrical elevation beam pattern. The antenna comprises two conical sections mounted against a grounded backplane with the tapered ends of the sections facing each other. The sections are of unequal size and have curved edges. The antenna is fed by a rectangular waveguide passing through the backplane between the tapered ends of the sections.

Asymmetrical biconical horn antenna

An antenna system is provided for producing a plurality of differently directed beams of electromagnetic energy, each one of such beams being associated with a corresponding one of a plurality of beam ports, each one of such beams being produced from a common array of antenna elements. The antenna system includes a radar frequency energy lens assembly having a plurality of array ports coupled to the plurality of antenna elements. The lens assembly includes a radio frequency lens having a plurality of lens ports disposed about peripheral portions thereof. Each one of a first portion of such plurality of lens ports is coupled to a corresponding one of the antenna elements through a corresponding one of the array ports and each one of a second, opposing portion of the plurality of lens ports being coupled to a corresponding one of the beam ports. Each one of the lens ports in one of the portions thereof includes a pair of tapered feeds. A power divider/combiner is provided for each one of the pair of tapered feeds, such power divider/combiner having a pair of branch lines coupled to the pair of tapered feeds and a common line coupled to the one of the beam ports or array ports coupled to such lens port. The electrical lengths between an input to the common line and the outputs of the pair of tapered feeds coupled to the branch lines of such power divider/combiner are equal.

Parallel plate lens antenna

A radio frequency antenna having a pair of conductors disposed over a ground plane conductor. First ends of the pair of electrical conductors are coupled to a detector means, a second end of one of the pair of conductors is electrically connected to the ground plane conductor and a second end of the other one of the pair of conductors is adapted to carry video frequency signals. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the pair of conductors is configured to spiral inwardly from an outer region of the antenna to an inner region of the antenna. The ends of the conductors disposed proximate the inner region of the antenna are coupled to a detector means. The ground plane conductor has a cavity disposed beneath the inner region of the antenna. The cavity is conically shaped and the detector means is directly bonded to the ends of the pair of conductors disposed proximate the inner region of the antenna. With such arrangement an inward traveling electromagnetic wave received by the spiral antenna is detected by the diode means and converted into a video frequency signal without the requirement of a balun. The detected video signal is coupled from the antenna at the outer end of the nongrounded one of the spiral conductors to a video amplifier. The outer end of the other one of the spiral windings is grounded to the ground plane conductor to provide a D.C. return for the video signal.

Radio frequency antenna

A multibeam antenna having a radio frequency lens fed by a plurality of feedports is disclosed. The radio frequency lens includes a printed circuit parallel plate region and a polarizer section. The polarizer section includes a plurality of polarizer sheets separated by a plurality of layers of dielectric material, the dielectric constant of the printed circuit parallel plate region and the dielectric constant of the layers of dielectric material being selected to form substantially collimated beams, each one of such beams being associated with a corresponding one of the feedports. With this arrangement, the polarizer section is an integral part of the radio frequency lens, thereby reducing the size of the antenna.

Radio frequency antenna with combined lens and polarizer

A radio frequency antenna having a microstrip feed network and a flared radiating structure directly fed by such microstrip feed network. A wedge-shaped dielectric structure is disposed in the narrow region of the flared radiating structure to match the impedance of the antenna to the impedance of free space. An E-plane array antenna includes a plurality of antenna elements, each including a single feed element on a dielectric board. An H-plane array antenna includes a plurality of feed elements on a single dielectric board. A cover, having an absorbing material, is disposed over the microstrip feed network to suppress stray radiation from propagating from such feed network.
