A process for producing a shaped article from a bonded, non-woven, fibrous batt of fibers comprising a number of steps. There is first provided (A) a dry, solid, heat-responsive fiber-binder; and (B) a moisture-responsive fiber-binder which is a dry, solid, particulate, raw, ungelled starch which swells and becomes sticky upon contact with moisture. The heat-responsive fiber-binder is contacted with the fibers to form a raw batt with the heat-responsive fiber-binder loosely adhering to the fibers of the batt. The moisture-responsive fiber-binder is contacted with the fibers to form a raw batt with the moisture-responsive fiber-binder loosely adhering to the fibers of the batt. The batt is heated to a temperature above the binding temperature of the heat responsive fiber-binder but below the scorching or melting point of the fibers thereby activating the heat-responsive fiber-binder whereupon the heat-responsive fiber-binder engages the intersections of the fibers binding the fibers together at their intersections thereby converting the raw batt into a partially cured batt. The partially cured batt is contacted with steam, thereby causing the moisture-responsive fiber binder to swell, become sticky and further bind the fibers. Non-woven fibrous batts, shaped articles, fiber binders and related processes

A process is described for producing a bonded, non-woven fibrous batt by the use of a dry, solid, particulate, latent-cross-linkable, thermosetting, fiber-binder. This fiber-binder is an intimate mixture of a solid epoxy resin and a cross-linking agent. The epoxy resin has (a) terminal epoxy groups; (b) an epoxide equivalent weight of above about 500; (c) a glass transition temperature above about 40.degree. C.; and (d) a melting point above about 70.degree. C. In the process the fiber-binder contacts the fibers to form a raw batt with the fiber-binder loosely adhering to the fibers of the batt. Then the raw batt is heated to a cross-linking temperature above the melting point of the fiber-binder but below the scorching or melting point of the fibers thereby melting the fiber-binder. The fiber-binder flows to intersections of the fibers and subsequently reacts the cross-linking agent with the terminal epoxy groups of the epoxy resin. This converts the raw batt into a hot cross-linked batt. The hot cross-linked batt is then cooled to room temperature. Batts are also described as is a process for hot molding these batts.

A process for producing a bonded laminated flexible structure by forming a thin web of fibers and then contacting the web with particles of a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride and contacting the batt with a sheet of cellular material; subsequently heating the unbonded structure and further compressing the unbonded structure to form the bonded laminated flexible structure.

In a cotton packaging system including a press section, transfer section, strapping section, bagging section and shrink section in longitudinal alignment, a cotton bale is formed by successive compression of overlapping cotton layers and is thereafter tied and bagged. The press section includes a vertically movable lower platen and stationary upper platens each presenting transient compression and conveyor surfaces that are oscillated during bale formation.

Cotton packaging method and apparatus

Apparatus for the formation and feeding of a cotton batt including a cotton retention chamber in which a first conveyor conveys cotton in a generally lateral direction toward a batt exit opening in a chamber and a second conveyor of the endless belt type with a lower drive roll conveys cotton away from the opening in an upward direction generally transverse to the lateral direction to establish a rotating batt supply body in the chamber. A rotatable stripper disposed between the front end of the first conveyor and the lower drive roll of the second conveyor forms the exit opening between the stripper and the front end of the first conveyor, and strips a batt from the supply body. The lower drive roll of the second conveyor is driven from the same drive means as the stripper and may be adjustable in an arcuate path about the axis of rotation of the stripper so that the angle the second conveyor makes with the first conveyor can be adjusted to expedite the operation of the apparatus without changing the adjustment of the size of the batt exit opening. Also the size of the batt exit opening may be independently adjusted by adjusting the front end of the stripper. The stripper may include a cylindrical hollow drum having a plurality of circumferentially and longitudinally spaced, circumferentially extending, slots, which drum is driven by fingers from an eccentric driver roll that moves outwardly and inwardly of the slots.
