A tail assembly for a rotorcraft having a fuselage and a rotor assembly that generates first and second excitation frequencies. The tail assembly includes a stabilizer having an aft spar and a forward spar. An aft joint couples the aft spar to the fuselage and defines a pitch axis such that the aft joint allows the stabilizer to pivot about the pitch axis. A forward joint couples the forward spar to the fuselage. The forward joint has an axial stiffness configured to tailor a chordwise pivot mode of the stabilizer and a bending stiffness configured to tailor a beamwise bending mode of the stabilizer. The chordwise pivot mode of the stabilizer is below the first excitation frequency, the beamwise bending mode of the stabilizer is above the second excitation frequency and the chordwise pivot mode of the stabilizer is decoupled from the beamwise bending mode of the stabilizer.

Dynamically tuned tail assemblies for rotorcraft

Embodiments are directed to a tiltrotor aircraft having a wing, a proprotor pivotably mounted on the wing, and a downstop striker attached to the proprotor using a load pin, wherein the load pin is configured to generate an output signal representing a force between the proprotor and the wing. A downstop mounted on the wing is aligned to be in contact with the downstop striker when the proprotor is in a horizontal position. A conversion actuator moves the proprotor between a horizontal position and vertical position. A flight control computer is coupled to the output signal from the load pin and configured to control the conversion actuator, wherein the flight control computer is configured to cause the conversion actuator to increase the force if the force is less than a first selected preload value or to decrease the force if the force is greater than a second selected preload value.

A method of preparing a composite article including providing a first bias assembly with a first bias roll; providing a first non-bias assembly with a first non-bias roll; positioning the first bias assembly to a dispensing position; dispensing a bias ply from the first bias roll along a bias path on a mold; cutting the bias ply; positioning the first non-bias assembly to a dispensing position; dispensing a non-bias ply from the first non-bias roll; and cutting the non-bias ply; wherein the bias path and the non-bias path are substantially parallel.

A compliant tail structure for a rotorcraft having rotating components and a fuselage. The tail structure includes a tail assembly having first and second oppositely disposed tail members. A tail joint connects the tail assembly to an aft portion of the fuselage. The tail joint includes at least four tail mounts configured to establish a nodding axis for the tail assembly. At least two of the tail mounts are resilient tail mounts that are configured to establish a nodding degree of freedom for the tail assembly relative to the fuselage about the nodding axis, thereby detuning dynamic fuselage responses from excitation frequencies generated by the rotating components.

A tiltrotor aircraft includes a propulsion system with a fixed engine and a rotatable proprotor. A torque box rib includes an upper rib cap configured to be coupled to an upper skin of a wing, a lower rib cap configured to be coupled to a lower skin of the wing, a forward post configured to be coupled to a forward spar of the wing, an aft post configured to be coupled to an aft spar of the wing, and a rib web configured to be coupled to the upper rib cap, the lower rib cap, the forward post, and the aft post.

One embodiment is an apparatus comprising an aircraft wing; a control surface hingedly connected to a trailing edge of the aircraft wing, wherein a slot is provided between the aircraft wing and the control surface; a seal disposed over the slot, the seal hingedly connected to the aircraft wing; a spring mechanism for preloading the seal against a surface of the control surface such that the gap is sealed with the control surface is in a first position relative to the aircraft wing; and at least one cam blade for lifting the seal from the surface of the control surface as the control surface moves from the first position to a second position relative to the aircraft wing and returning the seal to the surface of the control surface as the control surface moves from the second position to the first position.

A door system for a nacelle of a tiltrotor aircraft, the nacelle including a movable proprotor housing rotatable relative to a fixed portion of the nacelle from a forward flight mode to a vertical flight mode and a proprotor gearbox door connected to the movable proprotor housing and pivotably coupled to the fixed portion. The door system including a linkage to pivotably couple the door and the fixed portion of the nacelle; a track assembly mounted to the movable proprotor housing; and a door roller mechanism connected to the proprotor gearbox door. The door roller mechanism traverses the track assembly during rotation of the movable proprotor housing.
