A WORM optical recording element includes a substrate; an amorphous phase-change recording layer disposed over the substrate; a dielectric layer disposed adjacent to the amorphous phase-change layer; a reflector layer disposed adjacent to the dielectric layer; and wherein the material and the thickness of the layers are selected such that recording can be performed on the optical recording element by using a focused laser beam to form crystalline marks in the phase-change layer using laser pulses with less than 40 nS in duration, the reflectivity of the amorphous phase as measured by a collimated beam is higher than 28% and the contrast of the read-back signal is higher than 0.6, and the second and subsequent writing over previous recording results in at least a 50% increase in read out jitter.

A recording medium includes a transparent substrate; a crystalline phase-change layer provided over the transparent substrate; a dielectric layer provided over the phase-change layer; a metallic reflector layer provided over the dielectric layer; and the crystalline phase-change layer having a thickness and phase-change material selected so that data can be recorded in it on a first write, but on second or subsequent writes the written data results in at least a 50% increase in data jitter.

Recordable optical element using low absorption materials

A recordable optical disk including a transparent substrate; a recording layer formed over the substrate; a reflective layer formed over the recording layer; and a thin metallic interlayer formed on the recording layer at the interface between the reflective layer and the recording layer wherein the thin metal interlayer includes materials selected from the group consisting of Pd, Ni, Sn, Au, In, Te, Si, Ge, and alloys thereof, the interlayer being selected so as to improve the optical disk recording stability without significantly affecting the reflection of a recording light beam passing through the substrate and the recording layer and which is reflected by the reflective layer.

High performance media for optical recording

A recordable element with improved performance, and a method of making such element is disclosed. The recordable element includes a substrate and an optical recording layer deposited on the substrate, wherein the optical recording layer is formed of Te.sub.a Ge.sub.b C.sub.c H.sub.d O.sub.e where a, b, c, d, and e are atomic percents such that a+b+c+d+e=100, and wherein 10&lt;a&lt;40, 10&lt;b&lt;60, 5&lt;c&lt;35, and 15&lt;(c+d)&lt;65 and e.gtoreq.0; a metal layer over the optical recording layer; and the recording element having its properties changed by heat treatment for a time and temperature selected so as to significantly improve jitter, window margin, reflectivity, and recording sensitivity performance.

A composite quasi-crystalline material made of a polymeric support matrix having disposed therein polar quasi-crystals of photochromic spiropyran complexes, believed to be of the formula A.sub.n B, in which A represents the 'colorless' photochromic spiropyran molecule and B represents the colored merocyanine form which is the photolysis product of A, and n is 2 or 3. The polar quasi-crystals are present in the composite material in a substantially polar aligned form. Methods for making the composite material are also disclosed.

Disclosed is an imaging method based upon the selective exposure of a select pair of photoactive materials to actinic radiation. According to this method, charge exchange between materials of a photosensitive mixture results in the selective decomposition of one of the components of said mixture. In the event that the above materials are dispersed within a polymeric film, the selective decomposition of one of these dispersed components will be manifest by changes induced in the polymeric film. Such changes in the characteristic properties of the film will, of course, vary depending upon the content of the dispersed photosensitive components in the film and the extent of decomposition of one of said materials.
