A method and apparatus for suppressing multiple pollutants is disclosed. The apparatus includes a slagging combustor which effectively reduces the bulk of the NO.sub.x and SO.sub.2 produced through the combustion of coal. The slagging combustor also converts the bulk of the noncombustible material in the coal into a vitrified waste product. Following utilization of their thermal energy, the combustion products from the slagging combustor are conveyed to a lignite coke system. The lignite coke system provides additional suppression of the NO.sub.x, SO.sub.2, and solid noncombustible byproducts. In addition, the lignite coke system suppresses the gaseous toxic pollutants that exit the slagging combustor with the combustion gases. The spent coke is recycled to the combustor where its fuel value is used to reduce raw fuel requirements and noncombustible materials captured by the coke exit the combustor as part of the vitrified slag. In sum, extremely efficient reduction of NO.sub.x, SO.sub.2 and solid noncombustible pollutants is realized, gaseous toxic pollutants are suppressed, and solid waste byproducts are in a vitrified form which will resist future leaching.

Method and apparatus for enhanced suppression of the multiple pollutants

A method and apparatus for reducing SO.sub.x and NO.sub.x levels in flue gases generated by the combustion of coal in a boiler in which low NO.sub.x burners and air staging ports are utilized to inhibit the amount of NO.sub.x initially produced in the combustion of the coal, a selected concentration of urea is introduced downstream of the combustion zone after the temperature has been reduced to the range of 1300.degree. F. to 2000.degree. F., and a sodium-based reagent is introduced into the flue gas stream after further reducing the temperature of the stream to the range of 200.degree. F. to 900.degree. F. Under certain conditions, calcium injection may be employed along with humidification of the flue gas stream for selective reduction of the pollutants.

Integrated process and apparatus for control of pollutants in coal-fired

A method is provided for reducing the sulfur content of exhaust (flue) gas from a combustion installation manufacturing process, or chemical process comprising the step of injecting dry powder alkali hydrate sorbent directly into intermediate temperature (800.degree.-1200.degree. F.) combustion/process gases. The alkali hydrate sorbent reacts rapidly with the sulfur-containing gases in this temperature regime to produce primarily alkali sulfites. The unreacted portion of the sorbent largely remains in the form of an alkali hydrate and may react further with residual sulfur, especially in the presence of water, at lower temperatures. A novel combustion chamber is also provided having an injection means for injecting alkali hydrate sorbent into a combustion volume where the temperature is in the range of 800.degree.-1200.degree. F., to cause a predetermined reaction of the alkali hydrate sorbent with SO.sub.2 and the combustion gases to produce primarily alkali sulfites with the unreacted sorbent remaining substantially as alkali hydroxide.

A method is provided for reducing the sulfur content of gas from a combustion installation comprising the step of injecting outside of the combustion region an aqueous spray composition containing an additive which, when dried, reacts with sulfur-containing gases.
