In a reverse link of a wireless CDMA communication system, a method of maintaining an idling mode connection between a field unit and a base transceiver station is provided using various techniques to maintain the idle mode connection at a reduced power level. A preferred embodiment computes a time slot or frame offset based on modulo function using a field unit identifier in order to distribute field unit maintenance transmissions among available slots or offsets. An alternate embodiment detects explicit signaling states changes at the physical layer and causes power target changes. A further embodiment transmits maintenance data during predetermined time intervals, coordinated between the field units and BTS, allowing power levels to be adjusted accordingly.

Maintaining a maintenance channel in a reverse link of a wireless communications system

Methods and apparatuses are disclosed regarding a wireless field unit, which may receive a plurality of forward link assignment messages for a plurality of time slots for a plurality of forward link transmissions, each message including an indication of a modulation and a code rate associated with a respective forward link transmission. The field unit may receive at least one of the forward link transmissions in at least one time slot at the respective indicated modulation and code rate. The field unit may receive a plurality of reverse link assignment messages for a plurality of time slots for a plurality of reverse link transmissions, each message including an indication of a modulation and a code rate associated with a respective reverse link transmission. The field unit may transmit at least one of the reverse link transmissions in at least one time slot at the respective indicated modulation and code rate.

Qualifying available reverse link coding rates from access channel power setting

Methods and apparatuses are disclosed regarding a wireless field unit, which may receive a plurality of forward link assignment messages for the wireless field unit over at least one first code channel. Each of the forward link assignment messages may indicate a modulation type, a data rate and assigned channel codes for a respective assigned forward link transmission. Also, forward link transmissions may be time multiplexed between wireless field units. The wireless field unit may receive a plurality of assigned forward link transmissions. In addition, the wireless field unit my process each of the received assigned forward link transmissions in response to the respective received forward link assignment messages. Further, the wireless field unit may receive power control information in assigned time intervals on a time division multiplexed second code channel, wherein the time division multiplexed second code channel is time multiplexed between a plurality of wireless field units.

A control channel supporting traffic control in epochs is divided into two control subchannels each being less than or equal to about a half epoch in duration and occurring serially in time. Slot allocation data may be transmitted and received independently over the subchannels. One subchannel may be used for transmitting forward slot allocation data and the other subchannel may be used for transmitting reverse slot allocation data. The channel split into two subchannels may be a paging channel. The forward and reverse slot allocation data may be transmitted between a base station processor and field unit. Forward and reverse traffic data may be staggered by at least about half an epoch. Transmission of traffic data happens within about two epochs after the assignments.

Techniques for setting up traffic channels in a communications system

Methods and apparatuses are disclosed regarding a field unit, which may receive a plurality of forward link assignment messages for a plurality of time slots for a plurality of forward link transmissions, each message including an indication of a modulation and a code rate associated with a respective forward link transmission. The unit may receive at least one of the forward link transmissions in at least two of the time slots at the respective indicated modulation and code rate. The unit may receive a plurality of reverse link assignment messages for a plurality of time slots for a plurality of reverse link transmissions, each message including an indication of a modulation and a code rate associated with a respective reverse link transmission. The unit may transmit at least one of the reverse link transmissions in at least two of the time slots at the respective indicated modulation and code rate.

A technique for encoding digital communication signals. Data symbols are augmented in pilot symbols inserted at predetermined positions. The pilot augmented sequence is then fed to a deterministic error correction block encoder, such as a turbo product coder, to output a coded sequence. The symbols in the error correction encoded sequence are then rearranged to ensure that the output symbols derived from input pilot symbols are located at regular, predetermined positions. As a result, channel encoding schemes can more easily be used which benefits from power of two length block sizes.

Reverse link pilot integrated with block codes

Methods and apparatuses are disclosed regarding data rate and resource allocation decisions which are made for a communications channel, such as a wireless reverse connection. The wireless reverse connection may be between stations. One of the stations may be a base station and another station may be a field unit. The field unit may transmit data to a base station at a first data rate, based on a first resource allocation. Also, the field unit may transmit, to the base station, an indication, such as a digital data word, that the field unit has the capability to support the transmission of uplink data at a second data rate. The base station may transmit a second resource allocation to the field unit. After receiving the second resource allocation, the field unit may transmit additional uplink data to the base station at the second data rate based on the second resource allocation.

The performance of a RAKE receiver for indoor multipath WLAN applications on direct sequence spread spectrum signals having relatively short codeword lengths is enhanced by embedding a decision feedback equalizer structure in the signal processing path through the receiver's channel matched filter and codeword correlator. The decision feedback equalizer serves to cancel both inter-codeword interference (ISI) or &ldquo;bleed-over&rdquo; between codewords, and intra-codeword chip interference (ICI) or smearing of the energy within the chips of a respective codeword.

A channel estimator for use with the wireless digital data receiver facilitates processing of a preamble symbol sequence received over a multipath communication channel to enable the impulse response of the channel to be rapidly estimated, and thereby set the parameters of the receiver's decision feedback equalizer. During the preamble dwell interval, selected estimates of one or more received preamble symbols within a plurality of successive data symbols are repeated, in order to generate a longer sequence of preamble symbol estimates. The receiver's processor then employs this longer sequence of data symbol values, to solve an associated set of linear equations for estimating the multipath channel's impulse response.

The performance of a RAKE receiver for indoor multipath WLAN applications on direct sequence spread spectrum signals having relatively short codeword lengths comprises a channel-matched filter and codeword correlator front end, plus a signal combiner to which the codeword correlation component is applied. The signal combiner is supplied with a bias-corrected input calculated by a distorted codeword signature (power) generator, which is operative to generate and store a set of N codeword power correction values. The signal combiner combines correction values into the codeword correlation for each potentially transmitted codeword S . This serves to correct each correlation codeword metric by a de-biasing power component &verbar;S &verbar; for the unequal multipath-based distortions of the codeword energies. The output of the signal combiner is coupled to a peak detector, which selects a minimum distance-based 'de-biased' output as the transmitted codeword.

An RF communication system is for operating in the presence of a repetitive RF interference source powered from an Alternating Current (AC) power line. The system uses redundant transmission synchronized to the power line to ensure accurate reception by at least one second device. The RF communication system includes a first device powered from an AC power line which also powers the repetitive RF interference source. The first device, in turn, preferably includes an RF transmitter for transmitting in a frequency band of the repetitive RF interference source, a power line sensor, and a data transmit controller. The data transmit controller generates a plurality of data packets with each data packet including an error detecting portion. The data transmit controller also operates the RF transmitter to produce repetitive first and second transmissions of a same data packet responsive to the power line sensor. Accordingly, at least one of the first and second transmissions occurs during an OFF period of the repetitive RF interference source. The second device also preferably includes a data receive controller for receiving the repetitive first and second transmissions of same data packets and selecting one based upon the error detecting portions thereof to thereby avoid interference from the repetitive RF interference source.
