The presently disclosed technology relates to a nano-additives to improve the performance of lubricants, oils, and greases. More specifically, the presently disclosed technology relates to applying capped metal oxide nanoparticles, such as capped zirconia nanoparticles, in the lubricants to produce a tribofilms on the lubricating surfaces to provide wear protection to the said surfaces. Also, the interaction of the capped zirconia nanoparticles with other commonly used additives in lubricants may further optimize the performance of the resulting tribofilms.

Nano-additives enabled advanced lubricants

An article of method of manufacture of a low friction tribological film on a substrate. The article includes a substrate of a steel or ceramic which has been tribologically processed with a lubricant containing selected additives and the additives, temperature, load and time of processing can be selectively controlled to bias formation of a film on the substrate where the film is an amorphous structure exhibiting highly advantageous low friction properties.

Tribological synthesis method for producing low-friction surface film coating

Methods and compositions relating to the preparation of structurally and compositionally modulated composite surfaces that can potentially reduce friction and increase resistance to wear and scuffing in rolling, rotating and sliding bearing applications. Preparation of nano-to-micro size pores, holes, or dimples on a given solid surface and filling them with soft or hard coatings at desired thickness to achieve such properties.

Modulated composite surfaces

A method and article of manufacture of amorphous diamond-like carbon. The method involves providing a substrate in a chamber, providing a mixture of a carbon containing gas and hydrogen gas with the mixture adjusted such that the atomic molar ratio of carbon to hydrogen is less than 0.3, including all carbon atoms and all hydrogen atoms in the mixture. A plasma is formed of the mixture and the amorphous diamond-like carbon film is deposited on the substrate. To achieve optimum bonding an intervening bonding layer, such as Si or SiO , can be formed from SiH with or without oxidation of the layer formed.

Method of produce ultra-low friction carbon films

A carbon/carbon composite in which a carbon matrix containing a controlled amount of boron or a boron compound is reinforced with carbon fiber exhibits a low coefficient of friction, i.e., on the order of 0.04 to 0.1 at temperatures up to 600&deg; C., which is one of the lowest frictional coefficients for any type of carbonaceous material, including graphite, glassy carbon, diamond, diamond-like carbon and other forms of carbon material. The high degree of slipperiness of the carbon composite renders it particularly adapted for limiting friction and wear at elevated temperatures such as in seals, bearings, shafts, and flexible joints
