A liquid immersed pumped solid state lasing system comprising a light source and a lasing element spaced from the light source. The light source and the lasing element are mounted in an insulated container. The top of the container is open for inputting a clear cryogenic cooling liquid into the container to totally immerse the light source and the lasing element in the liquid. Heat transfer occurs by conduction from the light source and the lasing element to the liquid thereby cooling the light source and the lasing element to cryogenic temperatures. The container has a window for the output of laser light. A plurality of electrical leads which are superconducting at cryogenic temperatures are attached to the light source. When the leads are connected to a power supply outside the container, the light source directs light on the lasing element so that the lasing element is excited and transmits a light output through the window.

Liquid immersed pumped solid state laser

A thin foil stripper and simple non-obstructing power meter for a space based neutral particle beam system consisting of a panel of thin foils supported by resistance wires and mounted on a wheel or disk in such a manner that the surface used for stripping the beam may be changed or replaced periodically. The power meter consists of four resistors arranged in the form of a bridge, a power source (battery), a detector (voltmeter), and a display unit (recorded, etc.). Two of the resistors consist of the wires which support the foils and are nearly identical. The other two resistors are used to balance the bridge. When one of the strippers is exposed to the neutral particle beam, the support wire is heated, the resistance changes, and the bridge becomes unbalanced. The magnitude of the voltage produced is proportional to the power in the beam. The power meter is non-obstructing.

The disclosed innovative, interceptor seeker discriminator system has the capability to home in on targets containing nuclear materials by detecting the gamma fissions. The gamma signatures can be obtained from activating the nuclear material by a Neutral Particle Beam Weapon, or by detecting the natural fission emissions of the warhead. This system is innovative, in that the following properties are identified: 1) This system uses interactive discrimination techniques, which allows the gamma seeker to accurately home in on a true RV by comparing the return gamma emissions of objects. In this manner, the gamma seeker discriminator is expected to obtain substantially better discrimination K factor performance, when compared to using only IR techniques. 2) This system uses an interceptor/seeker to perform interactive discrimination and gamma sensors in conjunction with infrared sensors on the same interceptor platform (i.e., sensor fusion). A significant enhancement in interceptor performance is expected-by incorporating these methods. 3) This system is ideal for applications involving point defense for Conus Global Positioning Against Limited Strikes (GPALS) threat scenarios, and Nuclear Theater Missile Defense (TMD) threats.

A laser pulse fiber optic neutron detector which is capable of discriminating against background neutrons and gamma rays while measuring both the energy of an incoming neutron and its direction has a sensor having a plurality of vertically-stacked organic fiber light pipes and a reflector at one end of the light pipes. Ionized tracks in the light pipes caused by neutron radiation are detected by directing pulsed laser radiation into one end of the light pipes and detecting the laser radiation backscattered and reflected from the light pipes.

A method of locating an electrostatic discharge event in a predetermined ucture by sensing electromagnetically that an electrostatic discharge event has occurred and producing a trigger signal from the electromagnetic sensing to control a recording device for the starting of time, utilizing a plurality of acoustic detectors about the structure for sensing the acoustic of the electrostatic discharge event, determining the time elapsed between the starting of time by the electromagnetic sensing and the signals sensed by the acoustic detectors and utilizing the information gained from the times sensed and the predetermined locations of the sensors to determine the location of the electrostatic discharge event in the predetermined structure.

A beam intensity monitor for monitoring high energy particle beams by placing the monitor across the path of a particle beam to intercept a small portion of the particle beam as it passes therethrough. The monitor comprises primarily a four resistor bridge arrangement driven by a power source and utilizing a voltmeter as a detector for changes in bridge voltage. One of the four resistors functions as the sensor for the monitor. The sensor comprises an elongated wire resistance that is folded, coiled or otherwise shaped to encompass an area or region through which the neutral particle beam is directed to pass. The resistance wire is heated by passage of the particle beam therethrough, being impacted by approximately 0.1% of the beam, causing the bridge to become unbalanced. The magnitude of the voltage produced is proportional to the power in the beam. Simultaneously, phosphor beads attached to the elongated wire are also struck by the particles in the beam. These particles cause the phosphor to fluoresce and the light which is emitted from the phosphors is observed by a television camera, providing a measure of the spatial distribution of the particles within the beam.

Measurements are made near the doppler free angle and a direct view prism means is used for automatically compensating for small drifts in the laser frequency is used to insure that the most accurate alignment results are obtained even with laser frequency changes.

A passive safety probe for placement in a time varying magnetic field to alert personnel when the power density of high intensity electromagnetic fields reach and exceed applicable personnel safety limits. The probe senses the magnetic field present with a loop antenna. The loop antenna produces a voltage output in response to the magnetic field. The output voltage is linearized by a frequency dependent filter and rectified to provide a direct current output which is subsequently coupled to an attention getting indicating means such as a light emitting diode and/or a horn. When detected field voltage exceeds the threshold of the indicating means, a visual or audible response occurs, indicating that safe field levels have been exceeded.

The system uses the refraction angle of the reflected beam from a movable optical grating to produce the angular measurement.

A low cost multimegavolt high current switch that can effectively switch tages in the megavolts range and currents in the order of 200 thousand amperes. Switching is accomplished by the movement of a conductive member from a first electrically isolated position to a second electrically isolated position. During movement along a guided path the conductive member passes through an arc gap, initiating an arc or plasma in the gap to accomplish the switching action. Movement of the conductive member from one position to the other may be accomplished by gravity, pressure, electromotive drive, or other propelling means.

Multimegavolt high current switch

This disclosure sets forth a device which produces uniform electromagnetic ields in the medium frequency (MF) and high frequency (HF) regimes over significantly large test volumes. The device converts electromagnetic energy available from a standard radio-frequency transmitter into a vertically polarized uniform electromagnetic field which propagates through a large open region and is dissipated/radiated at the termination. A broadband (MF and HF) electromagnetic radiation over a large test volume is provided.
