The invention is a method of separating metals such as zinc, lead and cadmium from iron in secondary feed stocks such as EAF Dust, BOF Sludge, mill scale, iron fines, tire dust and other iron and zinc containing residues and dusts. The method includes the steps of reduction roasting the feed stocks at a volatizing temperature sufficient to volatilize the zinc and other metals into metal fumes but insufficient to volatize iron and then collecting the metal fumes as a metal dust. The metal dust is then leached with a leaching liquid to form a leach liquor and a leach residue. The leach liquor is then purified by zinc dust cementation to form a purified liquor and a zinc dust cement residue. The purified liquor is then separated from the zinc dust cement residue, and a zinc recovery step is then performed on the purified liquor.

Process for separating iron from other metals in iron containing feed stocks

A process for leaching a value metal from a titanium-bearing ore material comprising the step of leaching the ore material at atmospheric pressure with a lixiviant comprising a chloride and hydrochloric acid is disclosed. The leaching conditions are such that titanium is leached and remains in solution. The temperature is maintained at less that 85&#xb0; C., and the concentration of hydrochloric acid is preferably less than 20% (mass ratio). The preferred chloride is magnesium chloride. The lixiviant may contain oxidant e.g. sodium chlorate or chlorine.

Process for the recovery of titanium in mixed chloride media

A process for leaching a value metal from a base metal sulfide ore, comprising the step of leaching the ore with a lixiviant comprising a chloride, an oxidant and hydrochloric acid is disclosed. The leaching is controlled, by use of low concentrations of hydrochloric acid and a redox potential, to effect formation of hydrogen sulfide from the base metal sulfide ore. The hydrogen sulfide is stripped from the leach solution, thereby reducing the amount of sulfate generated in the leach to very low levels. The leaching may also be conducted to limit the co-dissolution of platinum group metals and gold with the base value metals. The leach forms a value metal-rich leachate and a solids residue. The solids residue may be subsequently leached to recover the platinum group metals and gold. The value metal-rich leachate can be is oxidized and neutralized to recover the value base metals. In an embodiment, the chloride is magnesium chloride and lixiviant solution is regenerated.

Process for the recovery of value metals from base metal sulfide ores

The present invention is a method of recovering valuable metals from a quantity of furnace dust consisting the following steps. A first leaching step wherein the furnace dust is leached at atmospheric pressure in a first leaching solution to produce a first leach liquor and a first leach residue, the first leaching solution consisting of an aqueous mineral acid solution. The first leach liquor is then separated from the first leach residue. A second leaching step is then performed wherein the first leach residue is atmospherically leached in a second leaching solution to form a second leach liquor and a second leach residue, the second leaching solution comprising a solution of aqueous HCl with a reductant. The second leach liquor is then separated from the second leach residue. A zinc precipitation step is then performed wherein zinc is precipitated from the second leach liquor by treating the second leach liquor with a quantity of alkali, the quantity of alkali selected to adjust the pH of the second leach liquor sufficiently to precipitate out the zinc in the form of a zinc salt in a third residue leaving a third liquor and then separating the third residue containing zinc from the third liquor.
