Provided are devices and methods to detect the presence of volatile organic compounds related to the presence of a disease state in a biological sample. The devices may include a detection moiety such as a polynucleotide in electronic communication with a semiconductor such as graphene or a carbon nanotube.

Volatile organic compound-based diagnostic systems and methods

The present invention belongs to the area of body odour modelling. In particular, the developed synthetic compositions of the present invention reconstitute human body odours, especially those arising from axillary perspiration. The use of the compositions herein allows for the evaluation of malodour masking effects of fragrant compositions in the field of personal care or homecare products and cosmetic product development.

Artificial sweat composition

Deodorant compositions are disclosed comprising a cross-adapting agent, alone or in combination with other such agents, in an amount effective to reduce perception of malodor. Deodorant compositions are also disclosed comprising a cross-adapting agent, alone or in combination with other such agents, in an amount effective to reduce perception of gender-specific malodor. The methods feature reducing perceived body odor comprising administering a deodorant composition wherein the composition comprises an amount of cross-adapting agent effective to reduce perception of such odor. Other methods feature blocking perceived body odor comprising administering a deodorant composition wherein the composition comprises an amount of cross-adapting agent effective to occupy an odorant receptor site, thereby blocking interaction of the site with other odorants. Methods of making deodorant compositions are also provided wherein a cross-adapting agent, alone or in combination with other such agents, are included in an amount effective to reduce perception of malodor.

Olfactory adaptation and cross-adapting agents to reduce the perception of body odors

Methods and compositions for reducing animal waste malodor using agents and cross-adapting agents are described.

Use of odor reducing and cross-adapting agents to reduce animal waste malodors

Certain volatile compounds naturally present in herring gull eggs are effective for repelling animals and birds, particularly canids, from the locus to which such compounds are applied. More particularly, the volatile compounds which are effective animal repellents include compounds exhibiting mint-like odors such as the compounds pulegone and piperitone. The invention relates to methods of using these compounds to repel animals, and to repellent compositions comprising effective repellent amounts of such compounds.

Naturally-occurring odoriferous animal repellent

It has now been found that cross-adaptation may occur between two structurally-similar compounds with qualitatively different odors. The perceived intensity of a malodor, for example, underarm sweat, may be decreased by cross-adaptation to at least one ester compound structurally similar to a component of such sweat. Such structurally similar compounds may be used in methods for decreasing the perceived intensity of a malodor such as sweat, in products designed to cover the characteristic odor of sweat, and in methods for covering malodor.

Method for reducing perception of human underarm odor by a pleasant

A novel method for treating a human female is disclosed comprising the step of exposing the nasal region of said female to at least a portion of the axillary secretions of a human male. This exposure is preferably continued in amounts and for a duration which are effective to significantly alter an endocrine related characteristic, such as the menstrual cycle length, of that female. In particular, the portions of male axillary secretions to be exposed to the female preferably comprise one or more compounds such as androstenol, dehydroepiandrosterone, and/or a compound or compounds exhibiting a burnt heavy axiallary-like odor which elutes at about 50 minutes as shown on the FID response curve of FIG. 3B. Studies show that pooled male donor secretions are effective to alter aberrant menstrual cycles, particularly those exhibiting luteal phase defects such that they become presumptively fertile menstrual cycles having durations of about 29.5.+-.3 days. Symptoms of perimenopause, such as hot flashes, night sweats and irregular menstrual cycles, are also treatable using the methods of this invention, which tend to promote female endocrine regularity and longevity.

Use of male essence to alter female endocrine response

A novel method of determining the onset of the fertile period of a human female is disclosed comprising the step of monitoring the axillary secretions of said female during the course of her menstrual cycle to determine variations in the concentration of androstenol or dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate. A first significant increase in the concentration of either of those compounds following the cessation of menses is indicative of the onset of the fertile period. In each case, a follicular phase peak occurs which exceeds by at least twice the concentration of those compounds present at any other time during the menstrual cycle. As a result, the monitoring of these compounds may act as reliable indicators predicting the occurrence of ovulation in five to seven days, and/or indicating the onset of the fertile period at a time when appropriate contraceptive measures can still be taken to avoid pregnancy or sexual intercourse can promote fertility.

A novel method for determining when cows are in estrus is disclosed comprising the step of monitoring the vaginal secretions of a cow to determine an increase in the amount of an indicator compound in said secretions. A significant increase in the amount of the indicator compound, concentrations above about 0.1 micrograms per gram of collected secretion, is indicative of estrus. The preferred indicator alcohols have ethyl ester indices of 8.1 to 8.9. In particular these alcohols are methyl-1-heptanols, such as 6-methyl-1-heptanol, or are methyl hydroxy heptenes, such as 2-methyl-7 hyroxy-.DELTA.-3-4 heptene. Alternatively, a cow may be determined to be in estrus simply to ascertaining that the concentration of methyl-1-heptanol is at least 0.1 microgram per gram of collected vaginal secretion.
