The present invention relates to improved metallurgical powder compositions, methods for the preparation of those compositions, and methods for using those compositions to make compacted parts. The metallurgical powder compositions comprise a base metal powder, such as an iron-based or nickel-based powder, to which is added or blended an organometallic lubricant. Organometallic lubricants are monomers or polymers having a metal-carbon bond or metalloid-carbon bond on the polymer backbone, which degrade into physical property enhancing compounds upon heating. The metallurgical powder compositions can also comprise small amounts of other commonly used alloying powders, binding agents, and lubricants.

The present invention relates to improved metallurgical powder compositions that incorporate solid lubricants, methods for preparing and using the same, and methods of making compacted parts. The solid lubricants contain functionalized polyalkylene lubricants substituted with functional groups selected from the group consisting of a phosphate group, phosphite group, hypophosphate, hypophosphite, polyphosphate, thiophosphate, dithiophosphate, thiocarbamate, dithiocarbamate, borate, thiosulfate, sulfate group, or sulfonate group.

Ejection properties, such as stripping pressure and sliding pressure, of compacted parts can be improved by using the solid lubricants. The solid lubricants contain functionalized polyalkylene glycol lubricants that contain a phosphate group, phosphite group, hypophosphate group, hypophosphite group, polyphosphate group, thiophosphate group, dithiophosphate group, thiocarbamate group, dithiocarbamate group, borate group, thiosulfate group, sulfate group, a sulfonate group or combinations thereof.

The solid lubricants contain polyalkylene-polyalkylene oxide block copolymer lubricants or a combination of polyalkylene-polyalkylene oxide block copolymer lubricants and at least one additional lubricant. The polyalkylene-polyalkylene oxide block copolymer lubricants include at least one block A of a linear or branched polyalkylene chain having from about 5 to about 500 carbon atoms, and at least one block B of an alkylene oxide chain having a formula &mdash;&lsqb;O(CH ) &rsqb; &mdash;, or &mdash;&lsqb;(CH ) O&rsqb; &mdash;. The polyalkylene block copolymer lubricants can have a formula represented as A-B or A-B-A.
